This Day in Labor History: March 15, 1940. John Ford’s film version of John Steinbeck’s The Grapes of Wrath, was released to universal acclaim. This was perhaps the greatest moment of the cultural left during the Great Depression. Let's talk about it!

We read it in one of my classes in high school and it was my favorite book that we read that year. Henry Fonda was the perfect person to play Tom Joad and the other roles were very well done too. The movie lacked some of the books earthiness, though, I suppose you could say. Certain scenes, like the book's ending, were left out. I would definitely recommend seeing the movie, and the book is a must-read of American literature.

I realized where I stood on the political spectrum when I read that book.

My grandma influenced me a lot on politics. She always voted Democratic and said that the Republicans represented the rich and the Democrats were for the regular people. I didn't fully understand that, though, until I read "The Grapes of Wrath."

Of course, my grandparents all went through the Depression, so I had heard a lot about it. As I read the book, I pictured my grandparents in the roles of the Joad family. It made it a very personal read for me.

henry fonda's greatest role. and he knew it. fonda's "best actor," was for 12 angry men. he was nominated for grapes of wrath.
