Starbucks workers at Capitol Hill store OK pro-union vote, first for Seattle, West Coast
Workers at a Capitol Hill Starbucks on Tuesday voted unanimously to unionize, the first embrace of collective bargaining by a store in the coffee giant's home market and the first for the company's employees on the U.S. West Coast.
Workers at Store No. 4, located at Denny Way and Broadway Street, took the pro-union vote after employees at other company-owned stores in Buffalo, New York and Mesa, Arizona also agreed to join with Workers United and embrace union membership.
During a news conference after the vote, two baristas said the local vote will likely provide fuel for other company workers looking to follow suit.
"I'm really excited for what this means for the national movement and specifically Seattle," Rachel Ybarra said after the vote. "I know that this is going to make other stores more confident to contact us and make all the other stores that are working to file that more confident."
