Union workers at Seattle timber giant Weyerhaeuser go on strike

Weyerhaeuser Co. (NYSE: WY), the massive timberland owner, on Tuesday said that union members have gone on strike, with a work stoppage in Washington and Oregon.

The strike, initiated Monday night, reflects a busy summer for organized labor, as union advocates at businesses like Amazon and Starbucks try to gain firmer footholds within companies.

Seattle-based timber firm Weyerhaeuser, a real estate investment trust, said collective bargaining has been underway with the International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers union since May. The union has contended it's been negotiating a new collective bargaining agreement since April for a contract that expired at the end of May. More than 1,100 Weyerhaeuser workers are unionized through IAM.

Denise Merle, Weyerhaeuser senior vice president and chief administration officer, said company officials made wage and benefit offers, and following a final offer, union workers at multiple Weyerhaeuser sites went on strike on Monday night.
