The union representing some 430 Planned Parenthood workers across five Midwestern states announced Tuesday a tentative agreement on a first labor contract, 18 months after workers voted to unionize.
The deal, which must be ratified by workers, includes at least a 11.75% raise over three years with the lowest-paid employees receiving a 17% pay bump in the first year, when the minimum wage increases to $19 an hour. The agreement also cuts health insurance costs and includes robust language on harassment and racial justice, according to the union, SEIU Healthcare Minnesota & Iowa.
This has been a really long and difficult process and our fight will continue, but Im really proud of what we were able to win in this first contract, said Shay Gingras, a senior research coordinator for Planned Parenthood North Central States and member of the union bargaining committee, in a statement. Im thankful we have our union and the power that comes with it.
The deal at Planned Parenthood North Central States which covers Minnesota, Iowa, Nebraska and the Dakotas comes at an important moment for the organization, as it confronts a rise in demand for abortion in Minnesota and new restrictions in Iowa.
