Taxes for 2019
We met with our accountant today to get a fix on what we might owe for 2019. I swear this federal tax law is nuts. We have never owed before, but we will in 2019. I kept our deductions the same, increasing the extra amount so we matched what was taken out in 2018. He estimates that we will owe around $1000 in April, so the tax "reduction" the republicans put through has done nothing for us. If we had kept our deductions what they had lowered them to be our paycheck would have been larger and we would have owed MORE money than the 1000.
Are there some people who are going to be surprised by their taxes this time around? I swear it is all smoke and mirrors to give the rich people the money and the rest of us the shaft.

(24,085 posts)of the cuts went to the top tier of income earners, e.g., the 1%ers (it was slightly more than this percentage, but you get the grist)...Yeah, we all got kicked in the 'you know what'...

(26,727 posts)That said, I doubt I'll owe very much. I'm retired. My income is from a small pension, two annuities, social security, and what I take from my investments. I have some taken from one of the annuities for estimated taxes. Maybe it will be enough, maybe not. I honestly don't sweat the taxes. We all need to pay them. Taxes pay for things like roads and schools. We all drive on the roads. Most of us used to have kids in schools. And even now, think of it this way: you want to have people reasonably well educated who will be taking care of you in the nursing home down the line.
What the rich do or don't pay is one thing. Meanwhile, please keep in mind what our taxes pay for and quit pissing and moaning.

(48,797 posts)If yes, you have two more checks - if paid monthly - and four more if paid semi monthly.
I would suggest to ask your payroll dept to deduct $250 more from your each of your next checks (if bi monthly). Don't bother with changing deductions now. Payroll cad withhold extra amount.
Good luck.
