Can you e-File Federal and paper file state?
State requires 1099's in paper form anyway, so not much advantage to e-File for them.

(13,199 posts)I use H&R Block software and federal e-filing is free, but they charge $19.99 for state e filing.
My state claims e filing is mandatory unless you have some personal objections. I sure do! I object paying the $19.99
So I paper file the state

(9,694 posts)For a fee, of course. In PA you can file directly on the state site for free.

(27,714 posts)You can usually get the software for ~$20 if you time it right... and that includes up to 5 e-files for federal - but adding a second state actually costs more than the initial package, and e-filing even the first state is twice as much (IIRC). So I file with the state on paper.

(11,463 posts)It was some stupid thing where because I owed like a $3 penalty on my state (Minnesota) return, TurboTax said I have to file a paper return (I forget the details but GRRRRR GRRRR GRRRRR, I don't want to print the long f'ing thing (the state requires a copy of the federal return attached) and then mail it and hope the postage is right and all that, but that's what I had to do).
But it allowed me to e-file my federal, even though I had a very small penalty on that one too.

Don't know about your state.
