Typical PR special in Pinellas...

http://www.tampabay.com/news/education/k12/once-an-under-performing-school-sanderlin-k-8-is-a-hit-with-pinellas/2211607

I know the principal (who was one of my students), and I wouldn't take anything away from the teachers and others who work hard. They don't make policy, and most are doing a good job. This was a poor school that is now a magnet and has become an "A" school. Parents of the wealthy clamor to get in. Of course, the magnets and fundamental schools often require parent transportation, parent meetings, homework help, etc.

Pinellas county creates these showcase schools to avoid desegregation lawsuits and to satisfy the high SES who would otherwise have their kids in private schools. Unfortunately, this covers up the problem that there are inequitable schools, lack of funding, and a return to racial segregation.
