Hydrogen systems are more advantegeous than battery storage: Study presents the potential in mobility and logistics

(translated by Nicole Dominikowski) | 11/04/2023

Hydrogen technology will play a crucial role in a climate-friendly energy supply in the future. It has potential as an alternative in transport and logistics and in the development of e-fuels. Thus, hydrogen could provide a basis for advancing energy transition. This 20-million-euro funded research programme aims to explore the potential and limitations of this technology.

For a successful transition to sustainable energy, Bremerhaven University of Applied Sciences researchers have spent two years exploring hydrogen technologies as an alternative to fossil fuels. As reducing CO₂ emissions is crucial to meet climate protection targets, the hydrogen economy may play a significant part in achieving a greener energy supply.

The technical feasibility of employing hydrogen as a molecular energy storage medium is ideal for decentralized production, storage, and usage. Nonetheless, its marketability and competitiveness require further testing, as well as establishing an infrastructure for this energy source. The "Hydrogen - green gas for Bremerhaven" project, financed by the ERDF, is examining possible applications for energy supply, vehicle propulsion, logistics usage (such as forklift trucks), and e-fuel experiments.

Even a hydrogen oven has been developed. The "Microgrids - self-sufficient units" study explored the possibility of powering an entire industrial area solely with renewable energy. The "IWAS - Lune Delta" project is examining the economic viability of adopting hydrogen as an alternative for industrial corporations...more

❝From an environmental perspective, the hydrogen storage system is superior over the entire lifespan in comparison to battery storage. Additionally, expanding the storage capacity of hydrogen systems proves to be easier. However, battery systems possess more maturity and for smaller storage systems, they are more cost-effective than hydrogen systems.❞

It will take more than just environmentally unfriendly batteries to get the world off of fossil fuels.

Many battery advocates want it all.

Maybe they're invested - imagine a nation that is run by stockholders for their own benefit

At least Germany is doing the work and producing studies!

In the United States its drones, surveillance and war

Think. Again.

...we just don't have the luxury anymore to waste time thinking about which non-CO2 emitting technology we would prefer to use.

We need it all, as quickly as possible.

We can fine tune our choice of tech after we are safely away from fossil fuels forever.

Having just survived the hottest summer on record, its time to "get her done". We can all have opinions, but the powers that make the decisions aren't listening to us. It will all come down to the lowest cost way of doing it. I learned a long time ago there is nothing perfect. You go with what you have available and is affordable. We don't need to argue about it. I was glad we just got a 100 megawatt solar array with about 50% battery storage here in El Paso. We lso got an addition to our community solar so I might finally get on that. When I see spme of the arguments against wind and solar taking up to much space and the recycling problems I have to left. Here in west Texas you could put all the junk in the US and no one would even notice. They went with solar here because our wind profile is not suitable for wind power and it would have required too much capital to build transmission lines from New Mexico. Beats the hell out of a gas plant.

In truth, there are applications for which (I believe) hydrogen is clearly superior. There are applications for which (I believe) batteries are clearly superior.

As an example, a couple of decades ago, people were seriously suggesting powering laptop computers with fuel cells. They have their advantages, “recharging” means swapping in a new “cartridge” of fuel, instead of hours plugged into an electrical supply, but, for most laptop users, I think that batteries are preferable.

For stabilizing short term fluctuations in the grid, batteries are likely preferable. For seasonal storage, hydrogen (or some other electro-fuel) is likely preferable. (As I tell people, to increase the storage capacity of a reversible fuel cell system, you just need a larger tank,)
