That wolf (OR-7), with others, circled the butte where I was staffing a USFS fire lookout tower in the Oregon wilderness, with my dog Nick, in late September 2011. That activity continued for several days into early October, when I finally closed the lookout for the season. The wolves then crossed the Cascade Range just north of Mt. Thielsen and turned south before crossing I-5, ending up in northern California.

At the time, I was not aware of the close proximity (about 1000 yards) of the wolves to my lookout tower. But when I found out about the wolves a week or so later, from the Bend Bulletin newspaper, it explained some of Nick's weird behavior during the time period the wolves were on our butte.

That wolf made quite a trek. I wonder why he migrated so far away. Your dogs must have picked up the wolves scent.
