WASHINGTON, June 17 (Reuters) - The U.S. is as many as 15 years behind China on developing high-tech nuclear power as Beijing's state-backed technology approach and extensive financing give it the edge, a report said on Monday.
China has 27 nuclear reactors under construction with average construction timelines of about seven years, far faster than other countries, said the study by Information Technology & Innovation Foundation, a Washington-based nonpartisan research institute.
"Chinas rapid deployment of ever-more modern nuclear power plants over time produces significant scale economies and learning-by-doing effects, and this suggests that Chinese enterprises will gain an advantage at incremental innovation in this sector going forward," the report said.
The U.S. has the world's largest fleet of nuclear power plants and President Joe Biden's administration considers the virtually emissions-free electricity source to be critical in curbing climate change.

Though China built upon a foreign base of technology, it has become the worlds leading proponent of nuclear energy. Chinese firms are well ahead of their Western peers, supported by a whole-of-government strategy that provides extensive financing and systemic coordination.
KEY TAKEAWAYS
- China intends to build 150 new nuclear reactors between 2020 and 2035, with 27 currently under construction and the average construction timeline for each reactor about seven years, far faster than for most other nations.
- China has commenced operation of the worlds first fourth-generation nuclear reactor, for which China asserts it developed some 90 percent of the technology.
- China is leading in the development and launch of cost-competitive small modular reactors (SMRs)

OP
Think. Again.
(17,956 posts)1. They're way ahead of us in H2 development also.
But so is everyone else, too.

(13,989 posts)2. I'm very skeptical about what Chinas capabilities are.
They cut corners everywhere and fake everything.
Its hard to know what building sits on any solid foundation or is made of sand. Same goes with their technology.
Those advanced reactors might just blow up because they used cheap pipes or melt through because the concrete was garbage.
The whole country has become a scam, in it for what they can steal today.

(38,930 posts)3. We see a lot of cheap imported Chinese crap in the U.S.A. and not a lot of the good stuff.
The Chinese economy has developed some world class science, technology, engineering, and manufacturing sectors. The old stereotypes are no longer valid.
U.S. American exceptionalism is going to bite us in the ass.
