Shanghai Electric Accelerates Hydrogen Energy Chain Development, Boosts Clean Energy Adoption

SHANGHAI, July 30, 2024: Shanghai Electric announced that the Company has made another significant stride in lowering the overall costs of green hydrogen with its latest Z-series alkaline electrolyzer technology, an energy-saving innovation breaking through the bottleneck of the renewable energy sector to make emission-free hydrogen production more economically sustainable.

A solution that further propels the industry toward decarbonization, the solution, which adds to Shanghai Electric's prowess in new energy innovation, makes industrial applications of green hydrogen more feasible, accelerating the utilization of hydrogen in chemical, transportation, metallurgy, and green energy storage sectors.

"Hydrogen production involves multiple segments and a long industrial chain, with cost being the primary challenge. Green hydrogen is more expensive than grey hydrogen, requiring solutions across production, storage, refueling, and usage. Our goal is to streamline the entire technology chain, driving industry-wide cost reductions," said Wu Liang, Chief Engineer of Shanghai Bright-H Technology Co., Ltd.

Green hydrogen, the cleanest form of hydrogen, is emerging as a crucial solution in the worldwide quest for renewable energy and decarbonization, but the overall economic feasibility of its production, storage, refueling, and usage is currently a major development constraint. Shanghai Bright-H Technology Co., Ltd., a subsidiary of Shanghai Electric, has been focusing on industry pain points and technological challenges, fully addressing the key links in the hydrogen energy development chain...more

China’s Hydrogen Strategy: National vs. Regional Plans
EnergyPolicy.Columbia.edu

A notable feature of China’s hydrogen strategy is that it is not, in fact, singular, but instead comprised of a national strategy and a multitude of regional strategies. Since the release of China’s Medium and Long-Term Strategy for the Development of the Hydrogen Energy Industry (2021–2035)(referred to as “the National Plan”) in March 2022,[2] there has been significant development in the country’s hydrogen space.

I'm glad to see someone, somewhere, is working toward bringing H2 into the mainstream. Research and development is always necessary to launch any new industry, but we're up against a deadline that doesn't allow us to be as slack as the U.S. is being.

...is simply a scheme to accelerate climate change, that is to make things worse.

That of course, has been the result of half a century of prattling about hydrogen; things are getting worse faster.

The scientific paper is here:

Subsidizing Grid-Based Electrolytic Hydrogen Will Increase Greenhouse Gas Emissions in Coal Dominated Power Systems Liqun Peng, Yang Guo, Shangwei Liu, Gang He, and Denise L. Mauzerall Environmental Science & Technology 2024 58 (12), 5187-5195

The text is clear enough.

From the introductory text:

... Currently, nearly all hydrogen in China is either produced directly from fossil fuels (55% from coal gasification and 14% from steam methane reforming (SMR)) or as a byproduct of petroleum refining (28%), with only 1% coming from water electrolysis. (2) Producing 1 kg of coal- or SMR-based hydrogen emits roughly 19 and 10 kg of CO2, respectively. (3) In 2020, hydrogen production from fossil fuels in China emitted ?322Tg of CO2, equivalent to 25% of total CO2 emissions from industrial processes, a number expected to rise with increasing hydrogen demand. (4) Industrial processes include production of nonmetallic mineral products, chemical, and metal products, as well as production and consumption of halocarbons and sulfur hexafluoride. (4)
.

The bold, italics and underlining is mine.

EST: Chinese Hydrogen Production Is Making Climate Change Worse.

Note this isn't dishonest advertising by the fossil fuel industry seeking to rebrand fossil fuels as "hydrogen," but is rather in a well respected peer reviewed scientific journal. There are actually lots of similar references if one looks.

Similar references can be found here in the links in the post I frequently in this space whenever the greenwashing of fossil fuels as "hydrogen" is advertised:

A Giant Climate Lie: When they're selling hydrogen, what they're really selling is fossil fuels.
