India is set to launch its first hydrogen train in December, marking a major step in eco-friendly rail travel. This initiative will transform transportation and set global benchmarks for sustainability. This was reported by the railway transport news portal Railway Supply.

Hydrogen Train: A Breakthrough in Technology

The hydrogen train uses fuel cells that combine hydrogen and oxygen to produce energy, emitting only steam. This revolutionary method eliminates pollution, offering a clean, green alternative to diesel-powered trains. Additionally, it consumes approximately 40,000 liters of water per hour, supported by advanced water storage facilities.

Launch and Expansion of Hydrogen Train Routes

The first hydrogen train will debut on the Jind-Sonipat route in Haryana this December. Scenic railways, such as the Darjeeling Himalayan Railway and Nilgiri Mountain Railway, may host future hydrogen train services. Indian Railways plans to expand the fleet with 35 hydrogen trains, each costing ₹80 crore.

The Project
  • The California Energy Commission (CEC) announced the approval of funds for a grant of 3.96 million dolars to the project “Solar PV Hydrogen production plant in Central California“, SoHyCal, presented by H2B2, within the framework of the Alternative and Renewable Fuel & Vehicle Technology Program.
  • The project, promoted by H2B2, will be a pioneer in the world, from both technical and commercial point of view, and consists in the construction, financing and operation of a 100% renewable hydrogen production plant with PEM technology, with a nameplate capacity of up to 3,000 kg/day, using renewable energy from a photovoltaic plant.
  • It also involves storing the hydrogen in compressed gas, dispensing into tube-trailers up to 520 bar, and capability of injection of hydrogen blended with natural gas.


Naturally, these Indian companies may be building an entirely different facility in India, you know, using coal-fired electricity to power an electrolyzer, but that would be stupid. There are more efficient ways to “reform" coal (or natural gas) to generate hydrogen.

You also asked about transporting it, but it’s being generated at the fueling station (i.e. no transportation needed.)
