China Accelerates Hydrogen Energy Development with 33 New Policies Across 24 Provinces and Cities

China Accelerates Hydrogen Energy Development with 33 New Policies Across 24 Provinces and Cities

Fuel Cells Works | December 4, 2024

China has taken a bold stride in its commitment to a sustainable energy future with the introduction of 33 hydrogen energy policies across 24 provinces and cities in November 2024. These initiatives, ranging from national to local levels, demonstrate a concerted effort to support the hydrogen energy sector through robust legal frameworks, financial incentives, and targeted industrial strategies. This flurry of policy-making is a clear signal of China's ambition to position hydrogen energy as a cornerstone of its clean energy transition.

In November 2024, China took significant strides in solidifying its hydrogen energy framework with the release of 33 new policies by both national and local governments. These policies are not just incremental updates but foundational changes that underscore the nation's commitment to establishing hydrogen as a cornerstone of its energy strategy. This comprehensive support spans from the central to local levels, enhancing the industry's growth through robust policy support and strategic guidance.

National Initiatives and Legislative Milestones

Among the notable developments, hydrogen energy's inclusion in the Energy Law is particularly significant. This historic amendment not only recognizes hydrogen as an official energy source but also transitions its management away from being seen merely as a hazardous chemical. This change paves the way for more structured and expansive development in the hydrogen sector, backed by legal and regulatory frameworks. The law's enactment is expected to catalyze the industry by ensuring consistent national standards and supportive measures.

Additionally, the National Development and Reform Commission has integrated three hydrogen technologies into its green technology promotion catalog, signaling a clear endorsement of hydrogen’s role in achieving China's green energy goals. Furthermore, the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology has rolled out new industry standards for fuel cell electric vehicles and hydrogen refueling protocols, promoting technological standardization and safety...more

I'm just saddened that it's an oligarcy/dictatorship that has the vision to develop it. Meanwhile, the leaders of the democratic countries are just sitting around taking BRIBES (lobby money) from the old technology companies to SUPPRESS innovation.

Hydrogen gas can be made in two ways.

Electrolysis: just run an electric current through water, and you get hydrogen and oxygen. Both of which are useful.

Processing methane: Methane can either be extracted from natural gas; or produced by fermentation by methanogenic bacteria. The methanogens are the best bet, because they can generate massive amounts of methane gas by processing SEWAGE. So, you kill two birds with one stone. (You have to capture the methane gas, of course. But once you've got it, you don't burn it. You split it into hydrogen gas, and solid carbon.)

The state of hydrogen development is technologically exciting, and politically depressing!
