I scored at the bread store today.
The Meijers sells Aunt Mille's Live Carb bread for $4.99 a loaf and I eat about a loaf every 2 days, they are small and 45 calories a slice. I like to put a slice of thin sliced cheese (30 calories) and a stack of leaf lettuce for a 120 cal meal. Also I do a Smoked Salmon spread sandwich on it at least once a day.
At the Aunt Mille's Bread store across the street they have near end of sell day loafs for $3.00, but sometimes they have specials like today 25 cents a loaf and I bought 20 loafs for the price of one at the retail store across the street. My freezer is now packed.
Hey don't judge me. I'm retired and on a fixed income.

(18,556 posts)I just bought my first ever loaf of Aunt Millie's bread today, but it won't be the last, because that stuff is GOOD. So glad I decided to try it.
No bread store around here though, so I'll have to pay supermarket prices.

(34,535 posts)I bought *all* my bread at the thrift store. Wed go through a loaf a day easily. Back then I could get good quality whole wheat bread for .75 a loaf. Nothing wrong with finding a good deal!

(16,347 posts)Good for you.
Can we all come over to your place for a cheese sandwich ? Do you have ample parking for about 5,000 cars ? Does 6:30 or 7:00 PM sound good for you ?

(33,998 posts)Sometimes I'll make some from a can on smoked salmon or even tuna. But, Meijers sells a 12 oz tub for $5.99 and I can beat that. No carbs and lots of cream cheese and veggies in it.
Google Salmon spread and there are lots of recipes for it.

(10,097 posts)She was acquainted with a younger woman who had a husband and several young children. This lady mentioned to my aunt that she bought day old bread for her family, because it was so much less expensive. My aunt chastised her, telling her that she should think of her children, and purchase only fresh bread.
The lady asked if my aunt bought fresh bread. The answer was that of course she did. The lady then said to my aunt (a very heavy woman), So you eat the whole loaf in a day? Of course not! was the indignant response. She then continued to ask if she finished the loaf on the second, or third, or even the fourth day. The answer to each question was No.
Well, said the young woman, we eat a loaf of bread a day, and then buy another. Our bread is never more than one day old, and costs half of what yours does, and you find yourself eating three or four or five day old bread. Who made the better decision?

(33,998 posts)An old fart was questioning his bill, thinking he was overcharged a couple of cents. After he left she went on about how he should eat at home if can't afford a meal there. I told her I'd bet he is a millionaire. We looked out the window and saw him get in his new Cadillac.

(13,889 posts)But how many slices per day do you consume to go thru a loaf once every 2 days?
One carb nut asking another i love breads & pastries of all varieties - my weakness.

(33,998 posts)Between 6 and 8. They are talking about the balance between carbs and fiber. 90 calories in 2 slices, so I'm not gaining any weight from it. Cheese has zero carbs and the salmon spread has zero. None in the mustard and not very many in a leaf or two of leaf lettuce.
My big focus now is on adding protein to my diet. I'm 6'3' and weigh in at around 195 and 72. I really need over 120 grams of portent to maintain muscle. I do a lot of cardio, but need to add some strength work to my program. I've found a high protein drink just before bed helps me sleep all night with no hunger. Google "protein a half hour before bed time".
Like my doctor advices, Keep Moving.

(33,998 posts)Just small ones. Eat an apple or other fruit and some nuts for snacks too. Back in my working days, I didn't have the time to do all of this, now it's pretty easy.

(33,998 posts)Costco, WallMarts and other stores. I would never buy a whole pallet, but they have some great deals on things I eat. Look for small stores that have New and Old stuff. 2 of them now with in a few miles of me. They buy the pallets and sell stuff for at least half of what it cost at the store. I check them out about twice a week. Lots of appliances and furniture that I'm not to interested in. Got a great deal on Fresh Step Kitty litter the other day and we use that. Bought a bunch of sardines a month ago. When one first opened I bought a case 24 cans of sparkling water for two bucks. The cans are 10cent returnables, so I got paid 40 cent to drink em. They caught on to that one. But they love to see me.

(221,375 posts)I still remember when I was in my teens and my parents were away, so I had to walk to the market (I didn't drive yet) to get my own groceries. A big bag cost me $10 and I had a tough time walking home since the (paper) bag kept ripping. These days, I can pay as much for just one item, like a container of in-store cooked chicken for my dog!
