Went to a presentation on fracking today and was appalled. And then came across this link -- http://www.kcet.org/news/rewire/commentary/the-well-next-door/california-fracking-earthquakes.html
Means more if you live in southern CA which I do but article talks about earthquakes in Ohio triggered by the return of fracking water to the underground.

(770 posts)They had a federal permit. The technique they used is old. It's used all the time and its intended to control sand production.
BlueStreak
(8,377 posts)They were able to extend existing federal permits bypassing environmental impact studies -- which seems to be illegal. There was no public showing of the permits. In fact, the reporter had to use FOIA to learn about this, and the relevant California state agencies were not aware of it.
Go read the article rather than just claiming things that are not true.

(770 posts)The earthquake risk is associated with water disposal, not fracking. The regulations need to specify pressure levels to avoid triggering earthquakes. Most quakes are small but indeed a big one coud be released in rare cases.

(2 posts)Many areas of WI are having our once beautiful landscapes DESTROYED by sand mining for use in fracking.
Land values in theses areas drop
Quality of life and tourism trade drop
Fine particulates in the air multiply astronomically
Water tables are threatened
Water quality has already been damaged
Commitments to the land "owned" by Native People are tossed aside
Koch and mining money control the WI legislature and our Governor and it's about to get worse in a hurry.
Righties used to care about LOCAL CONTROL, but not as much as lining their own pockets and affirming their power over those with more to lose and less resources to bring to the battle.
See this media release by the true states"man", State Senator Kathleen Vinehout. (Her full article will be up later today.)

If you can't stop fracking from the top, stop it from the bottom. Cut off sand supplies used in the process!
