Roger Penske touts M-1 Rail project as Detroit's 'home-run project'

(Detroit Free Press) Construction of Detroit’s M-1 rail project is scheduled to begin this spring, but officials still are evaluating specific designs of the streetcars that will run up and down Woodward from downtown to New Center.

The rail development is expected to create 700 construction jobs and it could take two years to build, project leaders said during a presentation to the Detroit City Council today.

The project’s construction manager, Stacy and Witbeck, and M-1 officials have developed a plan to maximize the opportunities for Detroit businesses to get work on the project.

“This is a home-run project for the city of Detroit,” Roger Penske, chairman of the M-1 Rail board of directors, said today. “I kind of look at it like the Super Bowl was in 2006. Maybe we can get the same kind of impact we had that time.” ..................(more)
