Hamilton vs NYC: Managing the Streets

Very interesting blog post from someone in Hamilton, Ontario, contrasting his city's policies to NYC's when it comes to managing streets for traffic. I've always contended NYC was doing it the right way, and this guy lays it out systematically using a recent report from NYC's Dept of Traffic:

NYC Redesigns its Streets for Safety, Vitality and Diverse Use

I've never been to Hamilton, but my template for how he describes that town's streets is Baltimore, where too many of the downtown streets are so filled with traffic or allow the traffic to move at such a high rate of speed that it is seriously hostile to pedestrians and bicyclists, and certainly doesn't encourage the use of mass transit.
