Updating Northeast Corridor Will be Complex and Costly

Faster, better passenger train service on the overcrowded Northeast Corridor will require more cooperation — and money — from eight states and the District of Columbia, eight commuter rail agencies, Amtrak, and freight railroads, rail experts said this week.

A new federal law requires the many users of the 457-mile corridor to come up with a cost-sharing plan by October 2014, and local transit authorities such as SEPTA fear that will mean higher costs for them.

States as well are struggling to pay for new Amtrak requirements. For instance, Pennsylvania in March agreed to pay $3.8 million to save passenger train service between Pittsburgh and Harrisburg.

"This kind of financial picture is very troubling," said Byron Comati, director of strategic planning at SEPTA. "Some of the states are going to have real problems with how these numbers shake down." ...................(more)

a japanese owned passenger railcar manufacturer just opened a new plant in northern il. the cars will be made in the usa with as many us components as possible.

will need a new generation of of locomotive power.

will need new trackage and electronic components.

will create thousands of construction and other related jobs.

eisenhower built the interstate highway system and that was over 60 years ago .at the rate we are going the new generation of rail transportation would be completed,if at all,in 20 yrs. that`s 80 yrs that we have`t committed to building our transportation system. of course add in the length of time it would take to rebuild our highways and bridges and let`s not forget our ports....i`m figuring 20-30 yrs before our nation can have what will be needed to remain competitive in the modern world. do we have 20-30 yrs? no we do`t.
