Bradley's vegan diet not new among athletes
The decision that gave him the title over Pacquiao may have been ridiculous, but it still doesn't change the fact that yet another well known, championship-level professional athlete is thriving on a plant-based diet.

World champion athletes who are known vegetarians, as compiled by The Food Revolution author John Robbins from various nutrition experts including Suzanne Havalas The Complete Idiots Guide to Being Vegetarian, Anika Avery-Grants The Vegetarian Female and Lisa Dorfmans The Vegetarian Sports Nutrition Guide are Ridgely Abele, winner of eight national championships in karate; Surya Bonaly, olympic figure skating champion; Peter Burwash, Davis Cup winner and professional tennis star; Andreas Cahling, Swedish champion bodybuilder, Olympic gold medalist in the ski jump; Chris Campbell, Olympic wrestling champion; Nicky Cole, first woman to walk to North Pole; Ruth Heidrich, six-time Ironwoman, US track and field Masters champion; Keith Holmes, world-champion middleweight boxer; and Dave Scott, six-time winner of the Ironman triathlon. The list goes on.

At the beginning of his study, these athletes were all on a typical meat diet. Chittenden had them then switch to a plant-based diet for five months. At the end of the study period when their fitness levels were reanalyzed, the athletes had improved a striking 35 percent. As Dr. T. Collin Campbell, professor emeritus of Nutritional Biochemistry at Cornell University once interviewed by Inquirer Science and Health, commented: only the dietary change could have accounted for these remarkable results. Campbell discusses this in his article Muscling Out the Meat Myth.
Although I eat meat, my girlfriend is a vegan and I have drastically cut back on animal products. I started using a vegetarian protein, energy drink, etc. (Vega is the brand if you're interested but I'm sure there's others). I also read a book written by a Firefighter in Texas (Engine 2 Diet) which was very helpful. Both these people are world class triathletes I believe. I'm not surprised to see the results from this article. Thanks for posting this!

(64,596 posts)I kid. Many athletes are veg and I love the science that seems to be backing it up.
Especially coming out of Cornell. I've got a nutritional certificate from them...hack-ass university they are. Whoa, wait a minute...that's not right.
