(From yesterday's Denver Post)
"Congressional Committee Votes to Allow Destruction of Wild Horses"
Last week, the House Appropriations Committee voted to overturn a ban that blocked the Agriculture Department from providing inspectors at meat plants that slaughter horses.
In 2007, the U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia ruled it is illegal for horse slaughterhouses to pay the U.S. Department of Agriculture to perform health inspections, which ended the plants in the U.S.
The two changes would reopen American Slaughterhouses and could eventually lead to wild horses being sent to them.
Right now, they could be killed en masse by the BLM, or a contractor, so long as it's for non-commercial purposes
But there's still hope,
"Senators Tom Udall (D-N.M.) and Lindsay Graham (R-S.C.), are expected to introduce an amendment to restore the ban on funding for USDA inspections of horse slaughter plants."

(131 posts)...the outcome. But where I live, you still have to be careful when you sell a horse. They'll buy it if it's priced too low, and truck it down to Mexico. They run big truckloads of horses that they've bought cheap down there and sell them to the slaughterhouses.
The few horses that we've parted with were sold to friends who asked us if they could buy a particular horse, and they send us pictures and updates on how they're doing if we haven't stopped by to see them in a while. I'd be leery of selling a horse to someone that I didn't know personally.
