(2,327 posts)PETA is relentless about animal rights because anything less is a cop-out. They wont promote awareness and affect change by being non-confrontational, animals are being hurt and tortured daily.
The most disturbing video I ever saw was called If Slaughterhouses had Glass Walls. Couldnt watch more than 2-3 minutes, what a horror show. I now refuse to eat pork and rarely eat any red meat. My daughter has been a vegetarian since the age of 12 after reading a PETA publication.

(28,246 posts)My hubs has not. I'm going to make him watch "If Slaughterhouses had Glass Walls." Thank you so much for posting this info.
I do eat a bit of chicken however and feed it to my 2 dogs. Won't eat duck - don't ask why I make the distinction. Most of my protein source is vegetable powder and fish and shell fish. I know I should give up eating ALL living animals tho. I once tried to shame an exfriend about her red meat consumption and she had the ignorant temerity to say "well maybe plants feel pain." I gave up, even on the friendship.
Bravo for you and your daughter.

(2,327 posts)My daughter is a force, she gave up all meat, chicken and fish at the age of 12 after seeing one of my PETA publications. At the time, we didnt think she would permanently give up meat, but she did.
In general, most Americans eat too much meat and too much of everything. I know I should give up all meat, but I still eat some chicken but no pork and rare red meat. Beans are a great source of protein, fiber and nutrients, much better for you than meat.

(15,600 posts)Vegetarian since 72, when a hitchhiker said "Oh you still make your body a graveyard for burned corpses of helpless animals"; vegan for about a year since i saw a part of some documentary that started with a cow struggling desperately groaning to turn around in a chute but couldnt and got shocked by the guy and i turned it off, wept, might have shrieked, no more dairy since then. Both visceral spiritual nauseating awakening events.

(15,600 posts)& never pushed it, and my time came when i saw that heartbreaking video of the cow trying to escape slaughter. Empathy. There are just so many alternatives to cheese and milk. And ice cream--just bought non-Dairy Ben & Jerry's today, Cherry Garcia & Chunky Monkey, yum. I'm sending a vegan zap to yr hubby, Zap!

(18,608 posts)After watching and reading about the torture of animals in both meat/dairy industry and experimentation I became vegetarian and ultimately vegan about 10 years ago. In addition to PETA another great organization to get behind and learn from is PCRM they have convinced many medical schools to stop using animals and instead use other methods that are cruelty free and equally as effective. They are also a great source of health information.

Yes, I've donated to them too. I've great respect for that org.
I've a long story about how my hubs, who is in medical physics, stopped an idiot physician at MCV in Richmond, VA from continuing to bash monkeys' heads in order to detect and measure intracranial pressure. Hubs developed a NDE way of measuring the pressure. Has a government-owned patent.

(64,595 posts)DUers, some, have been attacking PETA forever. It's kind of a thing here. But DU and PETA aside, God bless the liberators.
Damn them, yes. Put your energy there.

(29,331 posts)Over the years, I've posted threads in this group using PETA as my source, because PETA was the only animal rights group that cared enough to do anything about certain types of animal torture.
For example, the horrific way hundreds of thousands of angora rabbits in China are raised in tiny cages, taken out every three months to have their fur painfully ripped off them, and then thrown back into their tiny cages, shaking with fright and horror, and then, three months later, the process is repeated.
These gentle, sweet creatures need their fur, and to have it violently and painfully ripped off them every three months, so it can be sold to make coats and sweaters, is truly despicable.
PETA is the only organization that has bothered to do anything about the treatment of angora rabbits in China.
They've successfully organized boycotts of large clothing manufacturers and outlets such as L.L. Beane and others which resulted in those large corporations now refusing to use Chinese angora.
The horror and pain those poor rabbits have to suffer still goes on, but at least one group is doing something about it....and that one group is PETA.
BTW, when I do post threads using PETA as the source, I state clearly that
"This thread is not about PETA, and I only am using PETA as my source because PETA is the only group in the world that is doing anything about this animal torture.
Anyone who wants to argue about using PETA as my source, or disparage PETA in any way will be put on "Full Block"
I am a proud supporter of PETA!
I'm also a proud supporter of the Animal Legal Defense Fund, which, like PETA, does excellent work on behalf of helpless animals that are routinely tortured for monetary reasons
