The term "renegade Jew" is trending after one right-wing news organisation Breitbart News used it as part of a headline attacking William Kristol, the editor of another conservative journal the Weekly Standard.

The full headline reads "Bill Kristol: Republican spoiler, renegade Jew prepares third party effort to block Trump's path to White House". It accompanies a hostile profile of Kristol by the Jewish writer David Horowitz whose name has also been trending.

There's speculation in Washington that Kristol is one of the a group of anti-Trump Republicans - which is said to also include Mitt Romney - allegedly seeking ways to keep the businessman from running for the Oval Office. The conspirators are said to want to elect a third-party candidate to challenge Trump for the nomination in defiance of the will of those who voted for him in the primaries.

However, much of the online conversation resulting from Horowitz's article has been less about Trump's personal merits or lack of them and more about the pungent phrase in the headline. For some on social media "renegade Jew" encapsulated how bitter Republican divisions have become.

A Breitbart contributor stood by his use of the term “renegade Jew” in an attack on Brill Kristol for his opposition to Donald Trump, after Jewish groups and political commentators slammed the use of the term as anti-Semitic.

David Horowitz said the remark referred to Kristol splitting the Republican party and betraying Jewish interests in his push for a conservative third-party alternative to Trump.

“Splitting the Republican vote and electing Hillary is a betrayal of the Jews in an hour in which their backs are to the wall. Hence the designation renegade for those who are planning a third-party run, and for which I make no apologies,” Horowitz wrote on Breitbart Monday.

Horowitz’s initial article created a firestorm on social media Sunday evening, quickly amassing over 15,000 tweets, with some users calling the term anti-Semitic, and others finding humorous alternate uses for it.

3. Breitbart’s ‘Renegade Jew’ Disgrace

It’s possible to make a rational, although not necessarily persuasive, argument that those conservatives who are unreconciled to the notion that the Republican Party now belongs to Donald Trump are wrong. It’s also possible to view the policies of the Obama administration and their possible continuation under Hillary Clinton as dangerous to Israel. It’s also easy to dismiss the efforts of some of those conservatives to conjure up a third party alternative to Trump and Hillary Clinton out of thin air this late in the election cycle as a foolish waste of time that can’t possibly succeed.

But it is not possible to view David Horowitz’s hit piece against Weekly Standard publisher William Kristol published yesterday by Breibart.com under the headline of “Republican Spoiler, Renegade Jew,” as anything but an utter disgrace that sullies the name of the founder of that once estimable site and helps further discredit the pro-Trump camp for which Breitbart.com now serves as a mouthpiece. It also shows once again that, when it comes to the author of this piece, you can take the boy out of the Bolsheviks but you can’t take the Bolshevik out of the boy.
