LGBTQ activists hang banners and graffiti anti-occupation slogans across Tel Aviv in the run-up to the citys annual pride parade. 180,000 people are expected to take part in the festivities, at least half of them tourists.By Yael Marom
In the run up to Fridays Tel Aviv Pride festivities, Israeli LGBTQ activists hung banners and spray-painted anti-occupation graffiti across the city. The signs, which read Occupation: Israeli Pride and You cannot pinkwash the occupation were hung from bridges at the main entrances to the city. Meanwhile activists graffitied slogans such as You cant pink wash occupation in both Hebrew and English in dozens of locations.
The activists behind the action hope that the slogans catch the attention of at least some of the LGBTQ community and their supporters who are arriving in Tel Aviv to take part in the festivities.
The banners and graffiti are part of a week-long campaign by queer activists to raise awareness of the occupation, and the ways in which the Israeli government uses tolerance toward the LGBTQ community to divert attention from its human rights abuses.
Earlier last week queer activists published a response to this years official Pride music video, Pink, which was produced in tandem with the Tel Aviv municipality and includes the controversial artist Shefita, who does a Arabic-inflected cover version of the famous Aerosmith song. The women who dance alongside Shefita in the original video are replaced with images of home demolitions, aerial bombings, checkpoints, dead Palestinians, and the suppression of nonviolent demonstrations in the occupied territories.

(14,851 posts)It's gonna be a great pride, they expecting record numbers of LGBTQ tourists this year.
Almost impossible to get hotel rooms.
I can't wait.

(4,306 posts)The colorful pamphlets handed out during the parade wont include statistics on queer Palestinians from the occupied territories, who are barred from seeking asylum in Israel. The tourists wont see anything about the murder at the Bar Noar LGBTQ center or the embarrassing way with which the police handled the case. They wont see images from the march of the beasts, put on by Bezalel Smotrich, a member of Knesset who belongs to a party that is part of the coalition. Nor will they see Benzi Gopstein, a far-right activist who has yet to be investigated by police despite his incitement against the LGBTQ community prior to last years Jerusalem Pride Parade, where 16-year-old Shira Banki was murdered.
They also wont hear about the fact that Unit 8200, one of the most elite unites in the Israeli army, reveals the sexual preferences of Palestinians in the occupied territories in order to blackmail them and recruit them as collaborators. This is our reality this is what the most gay-friendly country in the Middle East does on a daily basis.

(10,274 posts)Just last year a bigot tried to murder six participants.
One woman was critically wounded, Magen David Adom emergency services reported, adding that two men were moderately wounded, and another two men and a woman suffered light wounds. Magen David Adom emergency services treated the victims on the scene, and then rushed them to three different hospitals in Jerusalem.
Police confirmed that the suspected stabber is Schlissel, a Haredi man from Modiin Ilit who stabbed three participants in the 2005 Gay Pride march. He was recently released from prison after serving a 10-year sentence.
Thousands of people took part in the march, which was heavily secured by police. In the Keren Hayesod Street, a haredi man broke into the crowd and stabbed several of the marchers. He was quickly wrestled down by police and arrested. Minutes after the stabbing, organizers and police agreed the march will go on and terminate in the agreed upon location in Liberty Bell Park.

(10,274 posts)Sad state of affairs. Seeing as the cities are 50 minutes drive apart, it sounds like a dangerous place for LGBT if you can get killed for taking a sunday drive to the wrong unsafe city.
My LGBT friends were shocked by the murder of a 16 year old girl at an LGBT parade in Israel, I'll let them know that only happens in Jerusalem.
In Memory of LGBT martyr Shira Banki (Age 16) murdered by religious bigot.
Authorities are under fire for failing to keep Schlissel away from the annual march. He had made a series of public statements indicating that he was planning another attack on the Gay Pride rally. He distributed a handwritten, anti-gay manifesto in which he called the pride march shameful and blasphemous.
Israels Internal Security Minister Gilad Erdan said Monday that the murder could undoubtedly have been prevented. Jerusalems police chief Moshe Edri has accepted responsibility for the failure, but does not intend to resign, Army Radio reported.

(14,851 posts)Much safer than Mathew Shepperd was in the USA and also safest place anywhere in the Middle East .
Safe in Jerusalem too but definitely not safe in Ramallah or Gaza or Teheran or Islamic State .
Sticks in some people's throat ... But makes sense a Jewish state would be so progressive, thousands and thousands of LGBTQ tourists.
Not even a good try .
Jesus Malverde
(10,274 posts)I guess compared to the nations and terrorists you mention Israel is progressive. I made the mistake of comparing Israel to western countries.
Let me know when Israel and it's religious rabbinical courts recognize marriage equality, unions and adoptions by same sex couples in Israel. Rights afforded LGBT couples in civilized nations.
King_David
(14,851 posts)Unless you think "Mathew Shepperd in the USA" is not in a Western country.
Gay marriage is recognized in Israel.
One thing anyone cannot possibly hang on Israel is LGBTQ rights - so much so that the bigots had to invent a word : "Pinkwashing".
Keep trying as your attempts so far have been dismal.
The LGBTQ file in Israel is just as anyone would expect from a Jewish state.

(14,851 posts)But first time I ever heard this argument.
You should warn 180 000 LGBTQ tourists who don't know how homophobic Israel is.
Also tell the bigots no need to push with the Pinkwashing because the Jews are homophobic in Israel and not pretending to be progressives.

(26,060 posts)ANYONE that Israel is JUST AS BAD as it's neighbors because of what rabbinical courts do, you're failing miserably. All anyone has to point out is that gays can even have an event like this one in Tel Aviv, can marry elsewhere and have it recognized in Israel, that gays have been serving openly in their military LONG before they could right here in the US. But you focus on gay marriage as if that makes them anti-gay. Pathetic.

(10,274 posts)Key words outside Israel. It's clear what your saying a union is ok as long as it doesn't occur in Israel.
Let me know when Israel gets on board with same sex marriages, performed in Israel.
Telling people their marriages are only valid if performed outside the community they belong to, much less in a foreign state is the ultimate rejection.
It's like California telling people they could only have a same sex marriage if they were legally married in Guam. We would laugh at that nonsense just like LGBT might laugh at the notion for equality for LGBT in Israel.

(30,109 posts)....attention from the occupation with its gay rights record, then Israel is doing a miserable job of it. The occupation is all over the headlines. The antisemites would probably prefer Israel have a bad gay rights record, as they'd have more material to bash the Jooz. Israel can't win either way, whether a good or bad gay rights record.
If only N.Korea, Iran, and Russia had good gay rights records to "pinkwash" their crimes...that would go over so well, right? It's too absurd to think about. But even if....would the Leftist bigots applaud those countries or nail them with the "pinkwashing" label?
The BDS holes would support and applaud those rogue regimes.

(4,306 posts)Just for you shira .........
They tell you Tel-Aviv is the GAY nation, but neglect to mention the OCCUPATION.
The Israeli government advertises Israel as a liberal, LGBT-friendly, charming tourist destination. In reality, the Israeli government uses the LGBT community to cover up for the OCCUPATION of the Palestinian people.
While Tel Aviv celebrates PRIDE, in a joyous colorful and most profitable festival, only a short drive from here, demonstrations are being violently suppressed, houses are being demolished and children are being arrested.
While the Israeli army prides itself in being LGBT-friendly, it blackmails LGBT Palestinians and threatens to out them.
Now do you still feel like partying in Tel Aviv?
