Sanders claims that he wants Democrats to embrace a more balanced approach to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, but his appointment of James Zogby and Cornel West to the Democratic Platform Committee suggests anything but. Indeed, both Zogby and West are notorious for espousing policy positions that are extremely critical of Israel, and for using rhetoric that sometimes borders on antisemitic.
Zogby, for example, has frequently used provocative and even bigoted language when commentating on the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. He has compared the plight of the Palestinian people to that of the Jews during the Holocaust. He has described Gaza as the worlds largest concentration camp and repeatedly accused the Israeli government of perpetrating crimes against humanity. Comparing Israels self-defense actions to the Nazi genocide against the Jews is a not-so-subtle form of Holocaust denial: if all Nazi Germany did was defend itself against Jewish aggression, then there were no gas chambers, no rounding up of Jews from the most far flung corners of Europe and transporting them to Auschwitz, and no genocide. Moreover, Zogby has endorsed the Boycott Divestment Sanctions movement, which calls for the boycott only of Israeli goods and institutions, until Israel allows for the so-called right of return, which would turn Israel into yet another Arab-Muslim majority state. In effect, Zogby is supportive of a group whose stated objective is to undo over 30 years of negotiations, and end the existence of Israel as the nation state of the Jewish people.

(25,699 posts)Like, we're already at a permanent impasse, to the point where discussion in Israel/Palestine usually ends up being like "yeah whatever I guess, hey, here's a recipe for awesome chicken wings."
If you're trying to convince people of something, you're not going to manage it here. And if you're trying to rile people up, well again, it's surprisingly ineffective in this group.
Maybe go post in the HRC group? They eat this stuff with a spoon.

(9,141 posts)We all know how biased and prejudiced you have been toward the Palestinians as there is nor horror that Israel has committed that you can't justify. You bring up Nazis and Auschwitz but close your eyes to Gaza where war crimes were committed and the Media and the Red Cross were not allowed in. We pump billions in military aid to Israel every year but you won't even allow food and medicine to Palestinians. No wonder you want a Israel hawk in power. You don't like to be questioned on your tactics which keep the world on the brink of war continually. Sorry but Sanders has a much better sense of fairness and justice than you are capable of. Or in your case Jewish propaganda.

last I checked, I'm with the majority of Americans and majority/plurality (depending on the pollster) of Democrats.

(58,724 posts)That's sort of an odd accusation to make. Usually people around here go with Zionist propaganda.
Also, I'm not sure where you got the idea that the media and the Red Cross were not allowed in to Gaza.
And where did you get the idea that Palestinians are not allowed access to food and medicine?

In light of the willingness of suicide bombers to die in the process of killing Israelis, the traditional methods of deterrence and retaliation seem insufficient. To succeed, Israel must turn the Palestinian leadership and people against the use of terrorism and the terrorists themselves. One way to do this is to make terrorists directly bear the responsibility for losses inflicted on the Palestinian cause as a direct result of their terrorism.
Here is my proposal. Israel should announce an immediate unilateral cessation in retaliation against terrorist attacks. This moratorium would be in effect for a short period, say four or five days, to give the Palestinian leadership an opportunity to respond to the new policy. It would also make it clear to the world that Israel is taking an important step in ending what has become a cycle of violence.
Following the end of the moratorium, Israel would institute the following new policy if Palestinian terrorism were to resume. It will announce precisely what it will do in response to the next act of terrorism. For example, it could announce the first act of terrorism following the moratorium will result in the destruction of a small village which has been used as a base for terrorist operations. The residents would be given 24 hours to leave, and then troops will come in and bulldoze all of the buildings.
The response will be automatic. The order will have been given in advance of the terrorist attacks and there will be no discretion. The point is to make the automatic destruction of the village the fault of the Palestinian terrorists who had advance warnings of the specific consequences of their action. The soldiers would simply be acting as the means for carrying out a previously announced policy of retaliation against a designated target.
