GOP mega-donor funds group calling pro-Palestine US students 'Jew haters'

Sheldon Adelson, the Nevada casino mogul and conservative mega-donor, is leading a campaign against pro-Palestine groups on US college campuses and has funded posters that accuse individual students of supporting terrorism and promoting “Jew Hatred”.

The multimillion-dollar effort, which has launched at six campuses in California, is targeting the boycott, divestment and sanctions (BDS) movement that has become increasingly popular among American university students protesting the Israeli government.

At the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA), recent Adelson-funded posters named 16 students and professors, saying they “have allied themselves with Palestinian terrorists to perpetuate BDS and Jew Hatred on this campus”. It further claimed BDS was a “Hamas-inspired genocidal campaign to destroy Israel”.

Robert Gardner, a 25-year-old UCLA senior, saw his name on one of the posters outside a grocery market. “I was really shocked and felt really disturbed,” he said.

On Tuesday, Feb. 24, conservative activist David Horowitz told the Jewish Journal in an interview that he and his organization, the David Horowitz Freedom Center, were responsible for posting on campuses nationwide posters inscribed with the words #JewHaters. The posters linked Students for Justice in Palestine (SJP), a national campus organization, with the terrorist group Hamas.

Posters linking Muslim students and BDS activists to terrorism appear on college campuses in California and Washington, DC

Last week, just days before coordinated terrorist attacks in Paris on Friday November 13th left 129 people dead, inflammatory posters linking Students for Justice in Palestine (SJP) and the Muslim Students Association (MSA) to terrorism and anti-Semitism appeared on several college campuses in California and in Washington, DC. Another poster smeared the boycott, divestment and sanctions (BDS) movement for Palestinian rights as anti-Semitic. The posters were discovered Sunday evening Nov. 8th on the campus of American University in Washington, and reported by Elli Bloomberg in The Eagle, the AU student newspaper. Similar posters were found on Thursday the 12th on the campus of UCLA and reported in the Daily Bruin.

(JTA) — A Jewish group founded by casino magnate Sheldon Adelson and other Jewish donors to fight the Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions movement against Israel on campus said it regrets funding a poster campaign that targeted pro-Palestinian student activists as “Jew haters” and terrorists’ allies.

The Maccabee Task Force issued its disavowal of the poster campaign Monday after the Los Angeles Times reported the link between it and the David Horowitz Freedom Center, which launched the campaign in February.

The David Horowitz Freedom Center is a conservative foundation based in Los Angeles.

“The Maccabee Task Force did approve a modest grant to the David Horowitz Freedom Center to focus on the true nature of pro-BDS organizations, but we did not ask for or approve the poster campaign that targeted student activists, and were not aware that our money had been used to support it. It should not have been,” Maccabee Task Force Executive Director David Brog said in a statement issued Monday.

“The Maccabee Task Force does not believe that focusing on student activists who conduct themselves civilly is an appropriate or effective way to combat the BDS movement on campus. Focusing on the true nature of anti-Israel and anti-Semitic groups like SJP (Students for Justice in Palestine), however, remains a core component of our approach and we will continue to fund efforts that expose those organizations and their leadership,” Brog also said.
