Israel/Palestine

Obsessed with spreading demonization of the Jewish state across the Western world by any means necessary and at any cost, time and again anti-Israel campaigners have fought tooth and nail to insert defamatory anti-Israel language into resolutions and bylaws of unions, NGOs, political parties and other institutions advancing unrelated progressive agendas. Time and again, this hijacking has driven more enlightened activists out of the host movement, contributing to its decline....
<snip>
...A related dynamic was evident in the unraveling of Britains Labour Party this spring, driven by the reluctance of Jeremy Corbyn and others to disavow a small minority of radical anti-Zionists within the partys ranks. Britains Jewish community, which once looked to Labour as its natural home, wrote leftist Guardian columnist Jonathan Freedland, one of the countrys leading Jewish journalists, is fast reaching the glum conclusion that Labour has become a cold house for Jews.
Its difficult to find a progressive cause that hasnt been compromised in some way by the so-called Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions (BDS) movement, from the antiglobalization movement to the fight against sexual assault. BDS destroys everything it touches, observes Cornell law professor William A. Jacobson.
Perhaps the most thoroughly wrecked, ironically, is the Palestinian cause. Having occupied the commanding heights of Middle East Studies departments in many major Western universities, anti-Zionist progressives have tiptoed around religious extremism, oppression of women and other social maladies in the Palestinian territories for fear of distracting attention away from Israel.

....There was backlash even within the African American community. The Ecumenical Leadership Council of Missouri, which represents hundreds of predominantly African American churches throughout the state, issued a statement saying it rejects without hesitation any notion or assertion that Israel operates as an apartheid country and reminding the public that Jewish Americans have worked with African-Americans during the civil rights era when others refused us service at the counter and worse.
What accounts for this extraordinary nihilism on the part of supposedly progressive BDS activists? Holding an extreme position on Israel is one thingthat can be the result of ideology, religious beliefs, ignorance or something else. Being willing to sacrifice all other causes and concerns ordinarily convergent with ones worldview for the sake of hurting the Jewish state is something altogether different.
This unusual grade of obsessive, self-destructive antipathy is a hallmark of classical eliminationist anti-Semitism. Unlike ordinary intergroup prejudice found in the suspicion and resentment which are often directed against neighbors of another tribe, another race, another faith, or from another place, explains historian Bernard Lewis, anti-Semitism is a special and peculiar hatred that attributes to Jews secret and diabolical power.
Against such a perceived enemy, no sacrifice is too great. Nazi Germanys diversion of much-needed resources in the final months of World War II from fighting the Red Army (and providing for the escape of German refugees) to exterminating more Jews makes sense only to someone who sees the latter as a cosmic evil.
Although anti-Semites often go to great pains to avoid expressing their hatred as anti-Jewish (indeed, they coined the term anti-Semitism itself as a politically correct euphemism for Judenhass), this unique cognitive signature is easy enough to spotjust take a measurement of what the subjects are prepared to sacrifice to harm Jews.
To date, however, mainstream liberals in America have been reluctant to call out the anti-Semites wreaking havoc within the ranks of the Left. If black livesor socioeconomic justice, peace, womens rights, etc.really matter to them, why have they allowed the cancer to metastasize this long?

....by allowing BDS to sabotage, poison & devastate their movements?
There are other occupations & settlements throughout the world. No one knows or cares about them. So why this obsession with Israel, which destroys & rots out each and every progressive movement it touches? Why is this being allowed?
That reason is explained in the OP, second part which was cited in post #1. BDS turns into shit everything it touches. You don't see the problem?

(30,109 posts)...to live in their historic homeland? And why do you care more about Israeli settlements than settlements anywhere else around the world in other occupations?
brush
(57,568 posts)As for your second question, we're talking about Israeli settlements forcing others off their land, not some other settlements.

Either forced off their land or exterminated.
That was part of the motivation behind trying to have one country where they wouldn't be subject to that sort of thing.

(6,171 posts)Fortunately, I doubt that right-wing conservatives have much leverage with a progressive movement like BLM.

(3,022 posts)white people telling black people what to do and why they are wrong. The comments like the one I blockquoted below that are on the site at your link provide a wonderful look into the minds of these white benefactors:
You have nothing to teach anyone you mush brained BLM activist... the DNC is the
organization that kept blacks as slave in the south and and the theory
of "southern strategy" IS DEMOCRAT REVISIONIST BS .. DNC has always been
the party of slavery, and they still are to this day. You are a globalist loving, multi national corporate lackey... that's all you are. So buy your brands, like your Nikes and your Jordan's and act like you have something to say , but you just dont. Once the democrat burn the Constitution .. the black people are going to be the first to feel the wrath of what a police state really is. You know where white systemic racism really lives... in most countries BESIDES the USA. You people are digging your own graves.
You really like to side with the best of humanity don't you?

(30,109 posts)1/3 of my family was wiped out within living memory for not being "white". They were hated & targeted for not being white. White people of BDS infesting BLM are poisoning it with the same old hatred. Nothing to be proud of there.
Meanwhile, along those lines...
High-level editor of Newsweek Middle East evoked what some called anti-Semitic tropes in a lengthy Twitter exchange on September 6.
In responding to a flurry of online criticism of a piece published by Newsweek Middle East titled Where is Palestine? Leila Hatoum alluded to the notion that Eastern-European Jews have no ancestral or historic connection to the Middle East....
...The rightwing website the Tower also highlighted a two-year-old tweet in which Hatoum evoked the Khazar hypothesis, used historically to say that Jews are not the Chosen People of God, said Mark Potok of the Southern Poverty Law Center, and that they are making a false claim to Israel. According to the hypothesis, Ashkenazi Jewry come originally from a kingdom of Khazaria, in Eastern Europe and Central Asia, and converted to Judaism en masse centuries ago.
The hypothesis has been discussed and employed by a whole range of groups and thinkers from the neo-Nazi Christian Identity movement to the left-wing Israeli author Sholomo Sand. In its most extreme permutations, the hypothesis is employed to prove that the European Jews of today and their ancestors and descendants are not the true descendants of the Hebrews of the Bible. Potok called is a hardline anti-Semitic theory.
Though the hypothesis has a much older history, it was popularized in 1976 by Arthur Koestler in a book titled The Thirteenth Tribe. Koestler, ironically, was seeking to combat anti-Semitism by proving that Jews were white Europeans not Semites.

See how that works? Jews are white descendants of Khazars & don't belong in Israel.
Pretty nasty shit there.

(3,386 posts)The antisemitism of the the BLM platform is not merely an unfortunate add on by radical Leftists. It is in fact the tip of a completely rotten iceberg. Yes, Jews care about the antisemitism, but everyone should care about what that means. It's another canary in the coal mine. The antisemitism is a warning of greater problems in the movement. Unfortunately the current BLM platform is not only a complete non-starter. The more ordinary Americans understand the substance of it, the more of them will just shut down whatever conversation is beginning on this important issue.
