Israeli security chief issues rare warning over potential for Jan. 6-style mob violence ahead of Netanyahu departure

TEL AVIV — The head of Israel's internal security service said that "extremely violent and inciting discourse" targeting the lawmakers who are seeking to end Benjamin Netanyahu's 12-year tenure as prime minister could take a potentially lethal form — a grim echo of the warnings ahead of the Jan. 6 insurrection at the U.S. Capitol.

Shin Bet chief Nadav Argaman said Saturday that the spike in vitriol targeting Netanyahu’s opponents online and in public demonstrations “may be interpreted by certain groups or individuals as one that allows for violent and illegal activities that may even, God forbid, become lethal.”

He called on public officials to rein in the groups that have vowed to do “anything possible” to prevent the swearing in of a new power-sharing government that has been spearheaded by centrist politician Yair Lapid.

Netanyahu has said he condemns any incitement and violence, but he said at a meeting with his Likud party on Sunday that “incitement against us is also raging.” He called on lawmakers to vote against the formation of the “fraudulent” alternative government.

Who threatens a baby !!!! ?????

Answer : https://www.timesofisrael.com/meretz-mk-leaves-home-after-right-wing-threats-to-her-baby/

Speaking to the Ynet news site, Zandberg’s partner Uri Zaki said he was “shaken to the core” by the threats made against their daughter.

Pointing the finger at Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, Zaki charged that the incitement against Zandberg was a result of him targeting her in a Sunday speech slashing the potential new government.

“He mentioned her and the next day they were looking for something under the rug to target the incitement, and sent their stray dogs,” he said, referring to the article about her bill. “These are terrible people and there is nothing they will not do to stay in power… even inciting against my baby.”

Meretz chairman Nitzan Horowitz condemned the threats, writing on Twitter: “In recent days, Meretz MKs have been facing horrific threats. It is clear to us why this is happening and who is directing it.”

“This is a machine of incitement that is working frantically to blow up the formation of the government,” he said.

25 years after the Rabin assassination, the man charged with protecting Israel and its leaders from internal security threats fears a repetition. His warning must be heeded

?Argaman did not invoke the Rabin assassination in his statement, but unnamed security officials, speaking to journalists after he had issued his warning, explicitly paralleled the current eruption of foul allegations of political treachery, betrayal and ostensible national political crisis, to the weeks and months before a far-right Jewish extremist, Yigal Amir, gunned down prime minister Yitzhak Rabin on the night of November 4 , 1995.?

We have been down this road before. The man charged with protecting this country and its leaders from internal security threats — whose agency is still deeply scarred by the failure to prevent the assassination of Yitzhak Rabin — fears that we are speeding down it again.

Woe betide us all if his strikingly uncharacteristic warning is not urgently heeded.
