“Since the mid-1990s, Netanyahu first bolstered Hamas to undermine the more moderate Fatah/PLO so as to advance his ‘no Palestinian partner for peace’ thesis. Second, over the past ten months, focusing on undermining Israel’s democracy and diverting resources, including military, to his ultra-religious nationalist supporters, ignoring all warnings on its ill-effects, not least on the IDF. Right now, IDF soldiers seem to rely much more on Israel’s robust civil society for logistical, financial, and moral support, than on its own government.

Doesn't give a crap about his fellow Palestinians. He only cares about enriching himself, just like his predecessor Arafat. Abbas is wealthy man from all the money he stole. Arafat died a wealthy man for the same reason.

Egypt intelligence official says Israel ignored repeated warnings of ‘something big’

Cairo official says Israel focused on West Bank instead of Gaza; Egypt’s spy chief said to warn PM of ‘terrible operation,’ Netanyahu denies it

By AGENCIES

9 October 2023

Mounting questions over Israel’s massive intelligence failure to anticipate and prepare for a surprise Hamas assault were compounded Monday when an Egyptian intelligence official said that Jerusalem had ignored repeated warnings that the Gaza-based terror group was planning “something big” — which included an apparent direct notice from Cairo’s intelligence minister to the prime minister.

The Egyptian official said Egypt, which often serves as a mediator between Israel and Hamas, had spoken repeatedly with the Israelis about “something big,” without elaborating.

He said Israeli officials were focused on the West Bank and played down the threat from Gaza. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s government is made up of supporters of West Bank settlers who have demanded a security crackdown there in the face of a rising tide of violence over the last 18 months.

The Egyptian official said Egypt, which often serves as a mediator between Israel and Hamas, had spoken repeatedly with the Israelis about “something big,” without elaborating.

“We have warned them an explosion of the situation is coming, and very soon, and it would be big. But they underestimated such warnings,” the official, who spoke on condition of anonymity because he wasn’t authorized to discuss the content of sensitive intelligence discussions with the media, told The Associated Press.

Netanyahu denied receiving any such advance warning, saying in the course of an address to the nation Monday night that the story was “fake news.”

Everybody's guard was down along the Gaza border where they thought walls, fences, automatic video surveillance, and even remote control machine guns would bee sufficient to prevent a surprise attack. Troops had been repositioned along the West Bank, and in the north along the Lebanese border.

In my view, the most urgent priority is negotiating with Hamas to secure the safe return of captives — women and children first of all — in exchange for the release of Palestinian prisoners. A revenge attack on Gaza is expected to kill many Israeli prisoners and thousands of Palestinian citizens, and to help Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, who is responsible for this security failure, to survive politically. But it will not help the parents and children whose loved ones were kidnapped, and not the two national collectives who wish to survive in this land.

Do you believe what the author said about "No Israeli leader is telling the truth"? Seems like kinda a jaded, anti-Israel view, don't you think?

Do you agree with the author that the only solution is to sit down with Hamas and agree to open the borders?

their reprisals than are killed in terrorist attacks - suggests an Old Testament revenge motive is actually in play. No one is talking about opening borders until a comprehensive agreement is reached, which must include a two-state solution. Hitler was the one with the military power. Comparing Hamas to Hitler is absurd. The Palestinians are weak, and terrorism is their only recourse when Israel refuses to abide by international agreements, and no country is willing to enforce those agreements. So Netanyahu encourages thousands more settlers to build on Palestinian land. Arabs are expelled from their homes in Jerusalem. You can't treat people like this and expect them to roll over and submit to inhuman conditions. Israel has confined the Palestinians in a ghetto without rights. Sound familiar? Netanyahu is more like Hitler than Hamas is. Remember the Nazi slogan about lebensraum? What do you think the settlements represent?

That kind of thing isn't going to work this time due to the sheer number of hostages.

No one claimed that the US went into Afganistan after 9/11 for revenge or retribution. The media and public accepted the need to erode al qaeda abilities, capture it's leadership and bring them to justice.

The framing here though, is designed to demonize Israel and the IDF.

The American war in Afghanistan incurred staggering costs — for the United States, Afghans and others — over two decades. The U.S. government spent $2.3 trillion, and the war led to the deaths of 2,324 U.S. military personnel, 3,917 U.S. contractors and 1,144 allied troops. For Afghans, the statistics are nearly unimaginable: 70,000 Afghan military and police deaths, 46,319 Afghan civilians (although that is likely a significant underestimation) and some 53,000 opposition fighters killed. Almost 67,000 other people were killed in Pakistan in relation to the Afghan war.

Depends on which Israeli leaders and which political party they belong to .

I dont believe Bibi or anyone from our religious right wing fanatics .

and Im not alone in that view :

Peace Now in a letter to the President of the United States and the UN Secretary-General: Do not believe Netanyahu. His government is effectively annexing the oPt.
20.9.23

Following the meeting between Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and President Biden (20.09.23), and before Netanyahu’s speech at the UN, Peace Now has sent letters to United States President, Joe Biden, and the UN Secretary-General, Antonio Guterres.

In the letters, Peace Now’s Executive Director, Lior Amihai, calls on them not to believe Netanyahu’s expected statements about Israel’s commitment to peace or the two-state solution, emphasizing that under his leadership, Israel’s government has been actively engaged in actions that annex the West Bank and threaten the prospects for a just and lasting resolution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.

In a recent report published by our Settlement Watch team, we outline the key decisions and political steps taken by Israel in the occupied West Bank over the past nine months since the formation of the Netanyahu-Smotrich-Ben Gvir government. The report shows a clear picture of Israel’s de facto annexation activities in the occupied West Bank, which blatantly contradicted PM Netanyahu’s previous commitments, most recently in the Abraham Accords. These actions are changing the political reality of the State of Israel and the physical landscape of the West Bank, effectively leading to the de facto annexation of the West Bank.

The report highlights 13 specific actions that contribute to this alarming reality, among them:

– Creation of the “Settler Administration” – a new governmental and civil body established to oversee all aspects of settler life within the occupied territories
– Record approval of housing units in settlements
– Legalization and transformation of 15 unauthorized outposts into settlements.
– Promotion of new settlements in East Jerusalem.
– Repeal of the Disengagement Law and a series of decisions to deepen settler presence in the northern West Bank.
– Significant changes to planning procedures in the West Bank, granting Minister Smotrich unchecked authority.
– Unprecedented budget allocation for infrastructure and settlement development.
– Establishment of six tourist settlements within Palestinian-populated areas.
– The creation of a new settlement in Hebron.
These actions are rapidly altering the status quo in the West Bank and further entrenching the Israeli settlement enterprise.

Peace Now implores to critically assess PM Netanyahu’s false statements and to hold Israel accountable for its actions in the occupied West Bank, which undermine the viability of a two-state solution. Peace Now remains dedicated to the pursuit of a just and peaceful resolution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict and calls upon the international community to support efforts that promote peace, security, and justice for all.
