Prominent Indianapolis blogger Gary Welsh has died, according to Indianapolis police, who say they are investigating the death as a "tragic suicide."
Welsh, 53, wrote the widely followed conservative blog Advance Indiana, which he launched more than a decade ago. He also was a practicing attorney.
The Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department's incident report says officers were dispatched to the Lockerbie Glove Factory Lofts, 430 N. Park Ave., before 8 a.m. Sunday after receiving a report of a person found shot in the stairwell of the building. The witnesses who called 911 reported that a gun was next to the body.
IMPD Capt. Richard Riddle said he expects an autopsy will be conducted Monday. He said the Marion County Coroner's Office will determine the official cause of death.

Comment from DavidaRochelle:
Agreed. Gary Welsh must have been unusually talented to be able to shoot himself with 2 bullets to the back of his head, (not side or front) and then to die with the same gun at his side. Even the call to 911 from his neighbor reported it as a murder. The idea of suicide came from an unnamed supposed "friend" with a few phony excuses. Obviously with what he wrote in his last blog the man was being threatened. That's not a suicide note at all.
WHO reading this knows a good investigative author, screenwriter, or producer seeking a tale with a lot of still unknown twists? WHO has solid connections with the IN Coroners' Office who can verify how the man really left this Earth? Was anyone you know
able to examine the body? WHOM do you trust to reveal the 100% TRUTH?
(I am unable to confirm any of this.)

(1,157 posts)I am an Indy resident and I read Gary's posts every single day for years. I am totally lost without him--we'll not know what we used to know about the shenanigans in the city, the state and beyond.
He was the only writer in Indy that consistently spoke truth to power. His greatest focus was on the city of Indianapolis and the dirty dealings by the recently ended Republican administration. Gary was right a lot more than he was wrong and he had a huge following, probably way more than he knew. If he came across as paranoid at times it looks like he had a very good reason.
It is highly suspicious that he died in the way he did, when he did--just after the post about Rafael Cruz and on the eve of the Indiana primary which was to be Ted Cruz's last hurrah. I'm not sold on the "he was depressed" meme that has been spread here in Indy. It seems that his death is already forgotten.
Killing himself on a public stairwell does not seem like something he would have done. Also, the lack of a suicide note by such a prolific writer is a huge disconnect.
I wish I had the connections to get this investigated properly. There is very little stomach in this city for unfettered journalism. I have good reason to know. In the early 2000's I spent several years trying to launch a weekly newsmagazine that had investigative reporting as one of its cornerstones. Those who had the ability to invest in such a magazine did not want us to succeed. And we never did get the $ to do much.

(1,157 posts)The comments on the IBJ story are pretty intense. A few people weigh in as friends and say they were worried about him but most of the commenters are convinced he was murdered.
Also interesting: Wayne Madsen's theory that Ted Cruz dropped out after losing in Indiana not because he lost, but because the PTB told him to quit to get the JFK assassination out of the news. Makes a lot more sense now, because he didn't give a hint of dropping out prior to that night.
