https://www.msn.com/en-us/health/wellness/is-bottled-water-left-in-a-hot-car-safe-to-drink/ar-AAETZ7Z?li=BBnbfcL&ocid=mailsignoutAs record heat bakes parts of the country and the world this month with July 2019 on track to becoming the hottest month in recorded history some experts believe there may be more than one reason to keep your bottle of water cool when the temperatures rise in the summer.
Some researchers who study plastics recommend against drinking water from plastic bottles that have been sitting in hot places for a long time such as a car sizzling in the sun concerned that the heat could help chemicals from the plastic leach into the water.
The industry disagrees, with the International Bottled Water Association maintaining that plastic bottled water containers are regulated and safe under a variety of conditions, including when they are left in hot cars.
But Cheryl Watson, a professor in the biochemistry and molecular biology department at the University of Texas Medical Branch in Galveston, advised people not to store bottled water in places that have a significant amount of heat, like a garage or a car parked outside.
When you heat things up, the molecules jiggle around faster and that makes them escape from one phase into another. So the plastic leaches its component chemicals out into the water much faster and more with heat applied to it, Watson told TODAY.
Its kind of like when you put mint leaves in your tea. The heat extracts the mint-tasting molecules and it happens faster in hot tea than it does in cold tea.
If youve ever left a plastic water bottle in a hot car or another very warm environment for a while, you may notice the water tastes a little funny, Watson noted: Thats everybodys bottom-line sensing mechanism you can even taste it, she said.
A 2014 study analyzed 16 brands of bottled water sold in China that were kept at 158 degrees Fahrenheit for four weeks and found increased levels of antimony listed as a toxic substance by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and bisphenol A (BPA), a chemical in certain plastics that can mimic estrogen and has been under scrutiny for years
But of the 16 brands, only one exceeded the EPA standard for antimony and BPA, a University of Florida news release noted.

(424 posts)But second, common sense tells me I do not want to drink the water. Valid or not, I can't do it.

(2,533 posts)I have a blockage in my parotid system due to a tumor removal in the neck. I have to wake multiple times a night to quench. Biotene etc... nothing works except a sip of sparkling water. I prefer the flavored zero calorie version & buy about 60 liters a month.
Here's the answer to a q I've had but almost forgotten. My favorite flavor-lime-started tasting like it was left in the sun. And it took years for that brand to taste right only last 2 years have the lime not tasted like it was left in the sun. Thats just one mass retailer in one city of probably 100K. That it went on for years is finally explained above-

That is the time frame of the tainted bottles. Must have been a huge warehouse & how was it so damn hot?
Oh of course-it was Wall-mart. They already killed a doggie of mine long ago with Melamine tainted dog food. And being on fixed income means I have to keep buying there. The competition is almost 20% more per trip. Damned if you-Period.

(23,000 posts)I looked at the main ingredient in Biotene and other substances that help dry mouth and found it was Xylitol that was the common important ingredient.
So I got a bag of Xylitol at the grocery store and I pour it into little plastic containers or glass containers and keep it by the bed and the couch and in my purse. I then just stick my finger in my mouth to wet it and dip it in the Xylitol and then lick my finger again and I've got a dose of Xylitol in my mouth that doesn't cost a fortune. I use as much as I want because it is very cheap to do.
I use small containers and small amounts since I don't want to keep using it after sticking my fingers in several times.
