It certainly won't keep you from getting the virus but it may help from spreading it to others. It might be worth swishing a few extra times a day if you absolutely have to be out and about. I'm going to bring some to work with me to help protect my coworkers, just in case. I am also wearing eye protection and a mask, of course. I thought about swishing every time I washed my hands, but that would probably be overkill. I saw the study and immediately worried that people would get a false sense of security by merely rinsing their mouths out.

A clinical trial will look at whether it helps to reduce levels of the virus in the saliva of Covid-19 patients at the hospital in Cardiff, with results expected early next year.

Prof David Thomas, from the university, said the initial results were encouraging, but the clinical trial would not produce evidence of how to prevent transmission between patients.

"Whilst these mouthwashes very effectively eradicate the virus in the laboratory, we need to see if they work in patients and this is the point of our ongoing clinical study," he said.
