Breakthru: Vaxed w COVID, Mild Symptoms Glad They'd Vaxed: *Israel, Comorbid., Age, Serious Effects

MSN/Business Insider, July 14, 2021. - Excerpts, Ed.

- The COVID-19 vaccines are extremely effective, but a rare few vaccinated people have gotten sick.

- "Breakthrough" infections are typically mild and might be less contagious than regular cases.

- To completely prevent infections, more of the population needs to get vaccinated.

Karlee Camme was supposed to see her grandparents for the first time in more than a year. Everyone was fully vaccinated and ready to go, but 2 days before the visit, she lost her ability to taste and smell. Camme, 24, had gotten the J&J vaccine a month prior. But it turns out she had a mild case of COVID-19. Looking back, she realized the runny nose and heavy tiredness she'd experienced earlier in the week might have been early symptoms. It was only the loss of taste and smell that signaled it was anything more than a common cold, leading her to get a COVID test.

.. Out of more than 95 million fully vaccinated Americans, less than 0.001% got breakthrough infections, the CDC reported at the end of April. That includes at least 594 hospitalizations and 112 deaths related to COVID-19. About 45% of breakthrough infections occurred in people aged 60 and older. That includes cases in nursing homes, where residents and staff were among the first Americans to get vaccinated.

Emerging data suggests many breakthrough infections are so mild they might as well be asymptomatic. According to a recent study by the ZOE Report, tracking breakthrough infections in the UK, the top symptoms of Delta-variant COVID-19 were a runny nose and a headache - largely because most people mingling and exposed to the virus were younger or fully vaccinated.

.. Masha Gessen, 54, a staff writer for The New Yorker, also got sick despite being fully vaccinated. Her illness was fairly mild, she wrote for the magazine - her symptoms included a runny nose, itchy eyes, fatigue, and loss of smell, and faded in about a week. The New England Journal of Medicine described 2 similar cases that both resolved within a week of testing positive: a 51-year-old woman who had a sore throat, congestion, headache, and loss of smell; and a 65-year-old woman who was also congested, fatigued, and headachy...

Snip: Older individuals with many underlying medical conditions and immunosuppression are more likely to contract coronavirus and would develop a severe case of COVID-19 even after being fully vaccinated, according to a world-first study conducted in Israel.

- But who are these people? A team of Israeli doctors led by Prof. Tal Brosh, head of the Infectious Disease Unit at Samson Assuta Ashdod Hospital, studied 152 fully vaccinated patients from 17 hospitals who developed COVID-19 more than seven days after they received their second vaccine dose and required hospitalization before the end of April.

Snip: "Overall, we can say that the main thing is that these are not healthy people,” Brosh told The Jerusalem Post in an interview. “Almost all of them (96%) had comorbidities: heart disease, lung disease, renal disease, dementia, cancer, or other common ailments. So, people who get breakthrough infections and are admitted are sicker than a usual person.

Specifically, 71% had hypertension; 48% diabetes; 27% congestive heart failure; 24% chronic kidney disease; 24% chronic lung disease; 19% dementia; and 24% cancer. Only 6% did not have any underlying medical condition.

Two men in their 60s had the most severe COVID-19 cases. All six guests who contracted symptomatic COVID-19 after the wedding were over 50.

The other people who contracted symptomatic COVID-19 after the wedding had preconditions including hypertension and diabetes or were classified as overweight, the study said.

This is why if you are vaccinated you need to chill out. You don't need to worry about getting COVID because even if you do it will be mild. Let the anti-vaxxer Republicon morons get COVID and maybe die. Not our problem anymore.

I'd strongly guess you're just going to get even more resistance as a result, and maybe even it'll be to the Delta variant.

I'm not worrying about COVID anymore since my two stabs if I'm honest.

I suppose there's some small chance one picks up a variant some anti-vaxxer incubated that defeats the vaccination, but if I died from that, hey ... hopefully I contributed something valuable to science

milder symptoms from breakthrough infection are usually younger and without major health conditions/comorbidities like diabetes, obesity, heart disease, cancer and weakened immune system.

I realized this article largely overlooked vaxed older populations and persons with with comorbidities- they get hit harder from breakthrough Covid infection. In the post above I added info. about this in a study from Israel.

Stay well folks!
