Ioana Gruchevska started working out at the LAB Gym in St. Louis a few years ago. But early in the coronavirus pandemic, she stopped coming in for about six months, worried that she'd catch the virus.
Like other gym members in the St. Louis region, she eagerly returned following temporary shutdowns and resumed her workouts.
The gym reopening and the safety protocols that were in place made me feel pretty comfortable to resume, said Gruchevska, who now works with a trainer at the LAB Gym a few days a week.
Although Gruchevska and others have returned, people in St. Louis are divided over how safe it is to go into the gym and work out during the spread of the omicron variant. Gym owners in the city say membership is down significantly at the time of the year when gyms usually see an influx of people working on their New Years resolutions to get in shape.

(106,340 posts)Workouts outside or in the home are stress-free in terms of COVID. By contrast, breathing hard--next to unmasked sweaty and potentially infected strangers in the gym? Not me. No matter how cold or inclement the weather, being outdoors to me is a blessing.
Why do some feel it impossible to consider doing so outside the gym? (yes, I recognize some may be trying to support gym owners, but somehow I doubt that is the majority).

(37,869 posts)The outdoors makes me feel exhilarated and alive. Why anyone would choose the unmasked sweaty stranger option is a mystery to me.
And when Im through, I have something to show for it.

(10,516 posts)Ever since the variants (and for other reasons as well), I haven't gone back. If things improve to a certain point, I might. (FYI, I'm 70.)

I'm sure that "some St. Louisans" say yes.
I'm also sure that "some St. Louisans" like their sex partner to defecate on them. Also, "some St. Louisans" inhale gasoline fumes for kicks. "Some St. Louisans" pick their noses in public.
I'd guess around 5% of St. Louisans have symptoms of severe mental illness, like anywhere else.
There are over 308,000 people in the metro St. Louis area. That means pretty much whatever you can think of, "some St. Louisans" are into it.
