medical background. Small study studies change often, and what the press picks up is not always the good parts.

Oils are absolutely necessary for health, like in absorbing nutriants, but it's important to deal with the kinds of oils. Palm oil is fairly high in saturated fats and is often seen as a nono by nutitionists. It may have some good qualities and a less saturated oil may replicate those.

Much of this you may already know, like the relationships between fat and fiber, but it really helps to talk to a registered dietician who has separated the science from the myth already. And realizes that there are significant differences between individuals and how they deal with nutrients.

about nutrition. I mean, have you seen the food they serve hospitalized patients?!

The morning after my husband's prostatectomy, after which he was sent home with strict instructions on what to eat and how very little of any of it to start off with, he was served a full breakfast of sausage, eggs, toast, and crappy, HFCS & palm oil pastry!

Where are the doctors and the registered dieticians?! (I get that it almost certainly has to do with profit$, but still, speak up, AMA!)

Back in the 90s, people thought all fats were bad and ended up eating more sugars to make up for the food's lack of taste. The result was worse health outcome.
You need some fats/oils in your diet. Extra virgin olive oil has long been associated with good health outcomes. Nuts are also associated with good health.

This sort of thing does cause me to have a modicum of compassion for the Q-Anoners, on whom I generally wish the same fate that befell Wicked Witch of the East. It can be hard to tell good info from bad!

but those reasons are environmental, not because it causes cancer or makes it worse. Yes, it has an effect on cancerous cells in a dish in a lab, but don't forget we're not dishes, we're people with digestive systems that break all oils and fats down to simple fatty acids. The chance of having anything slip through is small, our systems being excellent at separating the useful things from, well, shit.

I'd say don't go crazy about this. If you would feel better using olive oil or a light oil like safflower or peanut instead of the blended oils in the supermarket, that's fine. Trying to avoid every drop of it in your diet is the pathway to madness, don't do it.

I don't know if you saw this, but it strikes me that mice have digestive systems, too...

The research found that when palmitic acid was supplemented into the diet of mice, it not only contributed to metastasis, but also exerts long-term effects on the genome. Cancer cells that had only been exposed to palmitic acid in the diet for a short period of time remained highly metastatic even when the palmitic acid had been removed from the diet.

The researchers discovered that this “memory” is caused by epigenetic changes – changes to how our genes function. The epigenetic changes alter the function of metastatic cancer cells and allow them to form a neural network around the tumor to communicate with cells in their immediate environment and to spread more easily. By understanding the nature of this communication, the researchers uncovered a way to block it and are now in the process of planning a clinical trial to stop metastasis in different types of cancer.

DUer jfz9580m posted this in my other thread on palm oil:
Biological and Nutritional Properties of Palm Oil and Palmitic Acid: Effects on Health

I was working on comprehending it, though I’m not sure I can. I've been slogging my way through reports like this (on various aspects of prostate cancer--my husband's case is unfortunately a very high risk, aggressive one) ever since the diagnosis last April, and, frankly, my poor little brain is trembling under the weight of it all.

Still, it does seem to be painting palm oil as harmful not just to the environment. Correct me if I'm wrong.
