To live longer, pick up the pace just three minutes a day

Hurry to the bus stop. Rush up the stairs. Play tag with your kids. Romp with the dog. Vacuum the living room with a little extra zing. Increasing the vigor and gusto of our daily activities could have a substantial impact on our longevity, according to a fascinating new study of movement intensity and mortality.

The study finds that as few as three minutes a day of vigorous everyday activity is linked to a 40 percent lower risk of premature death in adults, even when they do not otherwise exercise at all.

The study is here:

In the winter, like now, I ride my bike 16.5 miles which takes 1:11, every day but Sunday. It keeps my weight right where I want it.

sat on my couch for 5 yrs. gained a lot of weight. decided to get his shit together, and started jogging up and down the stairs in our 3 story house. and doing pullups on my plum tree.
that and the alton brown diet based on michael pollin’s book and he got healthy and got moving.

he went back to school, got a phd while biking and climbing rocks out in utah.
so, i agree you can start w something small and go places.

I've been very depressed, have hardly exercised since the beginning of the pandemic, and consequently, gained a lot of weight. Your son's story gives me some inspiration!

sooo much bullshit in 2020. conflicts w neighbors that had always been friends.
the whole- world on fire thing.
economic bs drained my bank accounts. i dont even want to talk to ppl any more. i’ve forgotten how to get along w them.

but i got a new puppy, and hopefully she drags me into more activity.
and better sleep- not sure how ppl sleep w/o dogs on the bed. and this kid is the cuddliest ever. have slept well every night since i got her, even tho there were some hard nights.

she’s a real, real goodun. breeder is a saint. she’s my 10th pup, and by far the brightest.
training her is gonna be a breeze. she’s so attached to me already. so snuggly.
i have her great, great uncle, too. he’s 10 and has been such a good dog. used to be a therapy dog. did hospice visits w me.
so, yeah, i def believe in dog power.

i’m as broke as i’ve been in decades. there’s a light at the end of the tunnel, but it’s still a tunnel.
but i was on a waiting list for this pup since 2020 when mom had a false pregnancy.
i couldnt pass her up.

I have had many show up at odd times, times when I couldn't afford anything for them or me. But, for some reason, it seemed like destiny for that moment in time. Even though I weathered hard times with my pups, I learned so much about them, myself and life itself. I feel that way to this day with my current fur companions.

less drama, (although they may want something now and then), somewhat independent (you may need to take the pup outside for his business (lol...which can be quite entertaining and some exercise for the human) and not too many needs (bowl of food, spot to sleep).
They usually (pups do) are happy to see you come home. (my cats are less excited lol). I guess I have my life complete with the paw crowd!!

You know the “stop doing endless hours of cardio, do this instead” but they don’t actually tell you what this is

So I decided to noodle around and see if I could figure it out. It’s High Intensity Interval Training and the basic idea is to raise your heart rate for a couple minutes and then let it drop down for a few more minutes and repeat. The one I remember now was to start at a jog for five minutes then alternate 5 minutes walking with two minutes running five or six times.

I was trying it until I hurt my knee in an unrelated dog park incident. It felt good and seems to help my blood pressure too. Time to get back to it
