Walgreens, CVS Close More Locations, Start Tmrw, RX Chains Mass Shutdns, Grocers: Retail Apocalypse

- Walgreens and CVS Are Closing More Locations, Starting Tomorrow, Bestlife, * Aug. 15, 2023. - Ed. - The 2 Pharmacy Chains Are Continuing With Mass Shutdowns.

Stores began dropping like flies once the pandemic hit, and while closures have certainly slowed, the retail apocalypse is far from over. This year alone, companies like Bed Bath & Beyond, Tuesday Morning, and Christmas Tree Shops have chosen to shut down completely, closing all of their stores in the process. Other business are staving off such drastic action by paring down their retail footprint.

Even the 2 biggest pharmacy chains in the country, Walgreens and CVS, are in the midst of mass closures. Read on to find out where these companies are closing locations next.

Certain CVS customers in California are set to lose their local pharmacy this week. The company is planning to close one of its stores in Roseville, California, the Sacramento Business Journal first reported back in July. According to the news outlet, signs posted at the location on Pleasant Grove Blvd. in Roseville's Highland Crossing indicated that its closing date would be Aug. 16.

CVS spokesperson Amy Thibault told the Sacramento Business Journal that all prescriptions for the Highland Crossing store will be transferred to a nearby CVS on Foothills Blvd. "Maintaining access to pharmacy services in the communities we serve is an important factor we consider when making store closure decisions," Thibault said. "Other factors include local market dynamics, population shifts, a community's store density and ensuring there are other geographic access points to meet the needs of the community."

For its part, Walgreens is planning to close 2 separate locations this month. These closures will impact a store in Berkeley, Ca. Berkeleyside reported, and another in Robinwood, Md., The Herald-Mail reported. Both are slated to shutter permanently on Aug. 23. The closing Berkeley Walgreens is located in a building that will soon be demolished to make room for a 25-story, 326-unit apartment building, according to Berkleyside. Meanwhile, the closing Robinwood Walgreens, located on Meritus Health's medical campus, was recently at the center of a lawsuit between the pharmacy chain and the medical center, according to The Herald-Mail...

If you feel like your grocery budget isn't getting you as far as it used to, you're not alone. Food prices are 6.7% higher this year than they were in 2022, according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA). With that in mind, you may feel more of an urge to shop around these days to make sure you're getting the best bang for your buck. But depending on where you live, your shopping options could soon get a bit smaller. Several grocery chains, including Walmart, are closing stores this month. Read on to find out more about these upcoming closures...

Only Macy's and Penney's remain. The mall is 1/2 empty. More retailers have left, Victoria's Secret being the most prominent name still open. Penney's, last I checked, is owned by a couple of Commercial Real Estate firms that own the malls Penney's is in. So they're subsidizing it to keep the mall open.

The Big Box stores open and close, sometimes moving a few stores down the strip. A lot of money to move a store. Hope it's worthwhile.

Retail is where products go to die. Anything worthwhile is online in some warehouse. Kohl's in my area is the remaining retailer with any enthusiasm going on. They've managed to keep prices up, have sane closeout sales, and retain normal retail hours.

There's a venture capital firm in the Philly area doing big business converting retail and office space to flexible manufacturing space. They do the refurb, zoning, compartmentalization and rent to companies needing quick space or small space with lower costs than building new. We are reclaiming manufacture in the U.S.A.!

In the 70s we had a “small mall.” A real mall (indoors, food court) but only 1 department store anchor and 1 supermarket. In the 90s it got “de-malled” into a regular shopping center. 2015 the Bon-Ton closed. Radio Shack closed. The CVS moved to a bigger stand-alone store. Last summer the supermarket closed. The only store left is Ollie’s. The center is now being turned into an industrial park and we don’t know what’s happening to Ollie’s.

I had noticed. I didn’t know they were basically a Hone Goods/Big Lots type store until very recently. A coworker told me and I just went in and checked it out.

Now they can concentrate on Smaller numbers of stores. Having three drug stores on same intersection was stupid.

The one here in exurbia is dreadful, known thugs living in the parking lot, lots of empty shelves, small selection, stuff locked up because of rampant theft, so you have to wait around until an employee shows up to unlock it for you.

I started ordering drugstore type stuff online during covid and I have no reason to go back to dealing with the local store. I do occasionally go into the Walgreens north of here in more upscale Napa when I’m food shopping. And the CVS and the pharmacy in the back of Safeway locally are less depressing.

They were doing well enough to build a brand new building up the street last year, with a drive thru. They know you by your first name, and you can bring your dog in if you want.

In the meantime, the Walgreens closed their big store, that sold all kinds of stuff, and built a small pharmacy building. I think they only have drive thru drugs.
