Nov. 6 (UPI) -- Two new preliminary studies on recreational marijuana and health strengthen existing evidence that regular use negatively impacts heart and brain health, according to the American Heart Association.
The first report, drawing on data from a major study involving more than 150,000 people from all walks of American society looking at the relationship between lifestyle, biology and environment, found daily use of marijuana raised the risk of developing heart failure by about one-third compared with non-users.
A research team from Medstar Health, a not-for-profit health provider in the Baltimore-Washington metro area, found that among 156,999 healthy people it followed, those who used marijuana had a 34% higher risk of developing heart failure during the 45 months of the study, compared to those who reported never using marijuana.
This risk was the same regardless of age, sex, or smoking history with the findings of the study -- part of the National Institutes of Health's All of Us research program -- suggesting that coronary artery disease was the pathway through which daily marijuana use may lead to heart failure.

(27,531 posts)I believe benefits outweigh risks. Besides, if this study is correct, then Im screwed six ways from Sunday anyway - even with a 25-year hiatus. Interesting timing for this article, with legalization on the ballot in some states.

That shit keeps me sane, though I probably could cut back some, I have a busy winter ahead.

(932 posts)- you will have a significant risk of heart attack / failure. Same if you vape. Any thing you breathe into your lungs besides clear air reduces the amount of oxygen per breath which deprives your entire body of this essential element. Your circulatory system must work harder to take in the required amount of oxygen and exhaust the offending substance from your system.

(16,247 posts)I haven't seen either of the studies. AHA recommendations only seem to address smoking and vaping, according to CNN:

The AHA recommendations advise people refrain from smoking or vaping any substance, including cannabis products, because of the potential harm to the heart, lungs and blood vessels.
The latest research about cannabis use indicates that smoking and inhaling cannabis increases concentrations of blood carboxyhemoglobin (carbon monoxide, a poisonous gas), tar (partly burned combustible matter) similar to the effects of inhaling a tobacco cigarette, both of which have been linked to heart muscle disease, chest pain, heart rhythm disturbances, heart attacks and other serious conditions, said Page, a professor in the department of clinical pharmacy and physical medicine/rehabilitation at the University of Colorado Skaggs School of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences in Aurora, Colorado.

(2,047 posts)I first smoked pot when I was 15 in 1961. After all these years, it's still the safest (& legal here) way to raise your consciousness.

(6,031 posts)I use a palm sized dry-herb vaporizer, so it's just plain old bud that's heated, but not combusted.
Temp range is 350F to 420F and I also run it through a water piece to cool the vapor.
This uses much less bud, the smell doesn't linger as much, and it produces the same effect.
