Detectorists on Acorn
I watched the first 2 seasons on Amazon Prime. I cannot tell you what is the hook on this series, but I was hankering for more of the humble adventures of Andy and Lance, friends and family. I am a fan of British mystery and police procedural, blame in on Dad (rip). While this is not a series with murder and so forth there is mystery of what is beneath the soil. And in proper British fashion there is a lot of humor, since it's British I should write humour.
The first season took a while to grab me. Sad to say director/writer/actor Mackenzie Crook is not going to do a season 4. There is so much left hanging, the Magpies, Toni and Lance, Andy and Becky's new to them old house. I will miss them. Maybe Mackenzie will relent.

(152 posts)I by chance watched this two years ago while home with a cold and its one of those shows that I was afraid to share with my spouse. It was kind of like my own guilty pleasure. As for the hook, most male characters in US shows don't have a close connection except maybe for police or fire shows but the drama overpowers the connectivity. Thus Lance and Andy are two average guys going through life bonding through their (h)obby. Lucky for us we get to watch it play out with the DMDC and the cast of characters they engage each episode. This sums it up for me

(12,285 posts)Speaking of bonding, while it's a police show I am watching "New Tricks" again. The way all the characters fit together to make a real team is outstanding. They all have their foibles combined with their strengths. And the humour is outstanding.

(44,503 posts)The archaeology/history was the initial hook for me, but I really came to appreciate the leisurely pace and how the story lines and humor kept building on top of each other. How nice to see the beautiful countryside and not have to hear a cackling laugh track!
ETA: Plus, one of my favorite theme songs of all time.

(4,188 posts)It is by far my absolute favorite show of all time. I've never recommended it that people haven't thanked me--from ages 15-75.
