Ertugrul: Resurrection on Netflix. Turkish history
Interestingly, one of the female characters was actually from Ukraine. Today I saw that Ergogan stood up for Ukraine against Russia in real life.
For better or worse its a pretty long series. If you liked Game of Thrones I think its actually better, less horrible although no dragons in fairness.
Its clearly got a religious propaganda angle but its fascinating to see another cultures perspective. Its also very beautiful.

By the way, the show is about the struggles the nomadic Turks faced against both the Crusades and the Mongols, which was why they banded together and formed the Ottoman Empire--an Islamic State. This is central to the history-not propaganda.
We looked up things often and we're surprised to find the depiction of the Crusades were factual. We've been fed a bill of goods about that history.
Also, the horses they use are from a breeding program that is bringing these horses back. They are as close as possible to the horses used a millennia ago.
I just see the characterizations of the Islamic traditions being told in a very positive light and the Crusaders story being told in a very negative light as religious propaganda. Not like weve not had a gullet full of it from the Christian side.
Agreed, super interesting. Im glad you liked it too.

(12,168 posts)It is important history. The Ottoman Empire was one of the most successful and longest lasting.
Look up the fourth Christian crusade and you can match it to the Etugral Netflix series. It wasn't a pretty one at all--nothing like our knights in shining armor stories we've all been brainwashed with of the Crusades, but then again, if you can stomach an unvarnished version of Christianity in history I would suggest watching the Borgias. There are two versions (one European)--both excellent. So much foe the Pope being a direct instrument of 'God'.
Imagine what a different world it would be even today if Christianity hadnt been so badly used to conquer.

Russia and Turkey were enemies for hundreds of years. There really is nothing noble about Erdogan.
