I've been watching "The Patient" on Hulu
The story is about a therapist who is held hostage by a dangerous patient. The therapist is played by Steve Carell. Its pretty intense and I can't stop watching.
I first knew of Carell through The Office, but seeing him in dramas just blows me away. He's both a great comic and a great dramatic actor. Watched him in Crazy, Stupid Love and Beautiful Boy recently and he was excellent.

Really well done.

(17,833 posts)that the narrator/main character of a story never gets killed off. They always survive by some last minute miracle.
About halfway through the series I wondered if they might break that rule.
The psychiatrist used all his available resources to escape, but in the end it wasn't enough. When he died his eyes were open and I still kept thinking he was going to jump back up and take control. But no, he was gone.
The loose ends were wrapped up in the end. And having the serial killer request that his mother chain him up showed that the therapy didn't fail. He killed his therapist but not his father. And he did start to show some empathy.
I was kind of shocked but I think it was a fitting ending.
A very good job by all.

Proof you don't need fancy sets or CGI to do decent work, just good acting and a killer (no pun intended) script.
Reminded me of Hitchcock.
Surprised at the ending for reasons stated upthread. But it was honest. A good choice.
I expect to see more productions like this. They're inexpensive to make and attractive to steaming services. As long at the scripts are good they'll attract top actors too.

(17,833 posts)Jake Gyllenhaal is a police officer/911 operator and he's on the phone through the whole film. The script and his great acting carries it all.
Currently not subscribing to Netflix but I'll keep in mind ...

(2,014 posts)Watch Welcome to Marwen (it's a movie)--omg talk about excellent acting on his part! Totally a drama and one of those 'based on a true story' films. It's almost painful to watch the character. He's really talented.
I remember a few years back watching him in an interview and he said that comedy really wasn't what he originally wanted to do but he kind of got turned that way before he could get into more dramatic parts. I'm so glad he's getting the chance now, to show what he can do. I've put off watching The Patient as I know it will be intense.
