Binged the entire season of Ripley
last night on Netflix. Fabulous. Shot in B&W. Much, much darker than the Matt Damon movie years ago. Tied to the work of Caravaggio and the story of the murder/killing for which he'd done.
Really well done, all the way round. And a great little surprise performance from John Malkovich near the end.

Thanks for the reminder!

Saw the Bational Theatre Live filmed version of his one man show Vanya where he played all the parts. Brilliant!

I like that it took more time than the Damon movie to dig into the story.

(3,835 posts)I started and would have been in the wee small hours to binge so I have 2 and a half episodes to go. Some of those camera moves are Hitchcockian. Loved the way it is filmed. Definitely a staircase theme going on. Lots of scenes of stairs, climbing and descending.

(7,891 posts)Throughtout the whole thing I kept thinking: "WHY does nobody ask for or publish a pic of Richard??" and then I thought the perfect ending would be just what happened.
It took me a few days to get through it all, mainly because of that plot hole that stuck in my craw. Yeah, I know there was an era before smartphones when pics of people were more rare, but really?

(31,798 posts)There could have been an added scene early on where Tom burglarizes (or commits arson to) Marges' rental, stealing/destroying all the photos of Dickie he could fine -- except for one or two Marge stashed for safe keeping and thus forgets about.

(2,826 posts)how meta, or appropriate, as an homage to Caravaggio chiaroscuro style. Truly, nearly every frame was a visual masterpiece. And yes, that sage cat was a great touch.

(36,694 posts)which I never have. I kept thinking why doesn't anyone ever ask for a picture of Richard. At one point when the policeman
came to Margie's home there was a picture of her and Richard on the table and I thought there it is he will see it, but no. Lots of climbing stairs, the ashtray and the cat LOL. The limited series of 6 to 8 episodes are my favorite on Netflix, if I see more than one season I usually just pass them up, they never end.
