Why is there no medical help for tinnitus?
Why hasn't science delivered some relief?
ENT physicians won't see a patient for tinnitus -- no remedy.
And yet it's a fairly common issue. Disabling, for some.

50 yeas later, it's starting to get a little worse. Mostly I've been able to ignore it and function but now it's getting annoying.

(13,708 posts)...I learned that tinnitus can be associated with bradycardia (slow heart rate) for some crazy reason.
My heart rate this morning is 39 beats per minute. And I realize that as my bradycardia has worsened over the last couple of years, the tinnitus has also worsened.

Efficacy of self-hypnosis for tinnitus relief
Abstract
The efficacy of self-hypnosis (SH) on tinnitus relief was compared with two control procedures: 1) presentation of a brief auditory stimulus (BAS) to the ear with tinnitus; 2) waiting list (WL), i.e. patients receiving no formal treatment. The results have shown that 73% of SH subjects reported disappearance of tinnitus during treatment sessions, as compared with only 24% in the BAS group. Moreover, the short-term (1 week) and long-term (2 months) symptom profiles of only SH subjects revealed a significant improvement. Thus, SH may well be a beneficial method for the relief of tinnitus.

(14,651 posts)and pulled out the ear plugs I would still have a slight ringing in my ears for about ½ hour and then it would go away. One day it did not go away.. If I'm doing something, watching the telly or music I don't notice it. When it's quiet, like now I "hear" it.
Lots of theory's but no cure.

(9,167 posts)I have it right now but not as intense. I think letting ears hydrate with 2-3 drops of 70% alcohol after each shower helps, but does not eliminate. I'll try some right now.
Back in a flash...
Slight improvement. I need to protect my ears when mowing.

(13,708 posts)I have "labile" systolic hypertension, meaning that it spikes with stress. Sometimes into the stroke zone. Many times, without any provocation -- it just happens.
It is accompanied by a heightened noise in the ears.
And so if my ears are ringing very loudly, I know to check my BP and take a pill if necessary to bring the BP down to normal range.
But aside from that, it never goes away. Often bad. Sometimes VERY bad. But never gone. Sometimes I wake up at night with my ears ringing hard and loud, and then I take my BP and have to take med to bring it down. Very frustrating.

(14,677 posts)since my teenage years. I developed rheumatoid arthritis around the age of nine back in the late sixties. The only treatment for a child back then was aspirin and I took a high dose. (They would not use steroids on a child back then, at least my doctors wouldnt.) I always wondered why the dr. would ask if I had ringing in my ears. Now of course I know. Now I think if I didnt have the ringing, that would bother me oddly enough.

(13,708 posts)1. Tinnitus can worsen with "purines" in the system, in the same way that gout worsens with ingestion of purines. This can be a product of kidney disease....not filtering out the purines from certain foods so they build up in the system.
2. The Pfizer covid booster has tinnitus as a side effect. Ugh. Just got one two days ago, and my ears are worse.
