Ferrets are Cool

I have had tinnitus since about 1986. Most of the time I don't even notice.

It is like a bunch of cicadas in my head, but it is what it is. NOW, in the past two weeks, I've noticed something new in my head to compete with the cicadas. It is evidently called "The HUM" and is like a an aquarium air pump in there.
I can ONLY hear this when I am trying to go to sleep, but I am worried that it will get louder and more annoying.
Anyone else have The Hum and how are you handling it? Does it get worse or stay the same level?

mine is like a high pitch tone. like ive got a 5-6k oscillator cranked up.

most time it just goes into the background and i forget about it.

yeah sometimes i put my hands over my ears to find out whats crickets and whats in my head.

ive heard the whooshing sound occasionally. yes like an air pump. its gone away.
truly i dont know if its gotten worse over time.

i suppose i wont worry about it as long as im still functional

I used to hear this on occasion when I was in my 20s and 30s, but now I hear the tinnitus cicadas. If this is what you hear, it’s not tinnitus:

Maybe you hear it. A low frequency hum, almost a vibration, just on the threshold of human hearing. It’s not particularly loud. In fact, you might not have even noticed it yet – but once you do, you can’t stop hearing it. It sounds like a truck, idling on the street in front your house. Or the atmospheric din of an airplane flying overhead, that never gets further away. You can hear it when you’re outside, but it seems louder indoors, and particularly at night, when you’re lying in bed. Maybe it keeps you awake. Maybe it causes you headaches, dizziness, even nosebleeds.

If you do hear it, you’re among the roughly 4% of the world’s population affected by “the Hum”, a frequently reported but little understood global phenomenon.

for the phenomenon. I decided it was the cumulative effect of all the city traffic on the streets and freeways setting up a sympathetic resonance in the storm sewers, like a kind of standing wave, that traveled into the house via drain pipes and the foundation. As I could only hear it in some places I lived and not in others, I figured the places I could hear it must be nodal points in the system.

I have no idea whether my theory is actually correct (I think some people experience it in rural areas, so it’s probably not), but at least I was able to relax and ignore it.

2. artificial sweeteners .. forget them
3. make a lot of lentils, not too creamy. Share with a friend so you don’t get too tired of them.
4. bean burritos
5. real oranges, cantaloupe, watermelon, apples

6. give yourself some low stress movies and Tv shows. Comfort food so to speak

if that doesn’t work after 2 days, mail me here.

Basically, some neurons won’t turn off. We can dilute the situation (simple foods and relaxation)
and / or
try to control the situation with medication.

The only thing I have been doing different over the past 2 weeks is that I broke down and started using artificial sweeteners again. I had been off of them for many years but started back for no good reason other than convenience.
I will stop and see if I can get rid of the Hum.

I hear there’s more than 1 type if one is international.

try just milk and tea for a day if a coffee drinker

and never get flavor shots in coffee shops

She had a medication for it. But I think there were also nutritional supplements she took for it. I don't think they were a sure fire treatment. I think she also tried craniosacral therapy.

I could not afford to stay on it at the time because they were about $80 a month. If I could find that recipe again, I would buy them. I have searched but cannot located it.

but you might google a bit. You could also check your local library for a book called "Prescription for Nutritional Healing" by Phyllis Balch. They would have some recommendations I think. Gingko was one of the things she took. It promoted circulation.
