Many of us sit for hours, every day during our commute, behind
our desk, in front of the television and its killing us, researchers
say. The negative health effects of sitting are well-established. For
example:
A peer-reviewed study involving approximately 800,000
people, carried out by British researchers from Loughborough
University and the University of Leicester, found that people
who sat the longest (compared with those who sat the least)
have a more than 100 percent increased risk of diabetes, a
nearly 150 percent increase in cardiovascular events, an almost
100 percent increase in death caused by cardiovascular events,
and a 49 percent increase in death from any cause.
A recent study in the Annals of Internal Medicine concludes,
Prolonged sedentary time was independently associated with
deleterious health outcomes regardless of physical activity.
In other words, even a brisk run or other strenuous physical
activity every day cant undo the damage done by hours of
uninterrupted chair time.

A Little Weird
(1,754 posts)I would love to have a sitting/standing workstation but they are expensive and I don't think my employer will approve it. Maybe if more info keeps coming out about it the prices will drop.

(23,826 posts)I'm lucky that all my jobs have not been completely sedentary-- in fact, my last one had me running
up and down the stairs what seemed like all day long.
I need a new regimen and I need to STICK to it.

I think there are already smartphone apps specifically for this.
OSHA should make this a workplace requirement.

(23,826 posts)I get so absorbed in what I'm doing (and really enjoying it at the same time), that I'm hard-pressed
to even take a bathroom break!
But it's doable-- just a matter of making the time for a very important gift to ourselves. Maybe
the most important of all.

(27,509 posts)Here's an article from 2013:
Sitting is the New Smoking- Even for Runners
There's no running away from it: The more you sit, the poorer your health and the earlier you may die, no matter how fit you are.
