My gym doesn't offer personal training, so I'll have to find one on my own. I googled my question and found a bunch of websites, but I can't tell which ones are legit.

(11,446 posts)I get most of my exercise outside, either running and biking. Between busy schedules at home and at work, and the bad weather and short days, I haven't been doing much and have about 20 or so pounds to lose.
I'd also like to build up some upper body and core strength to help with my running. I don't want to add any bulk.
My problem is that when I go to the gym, I don't have a clue. I met with a PT at my gym who gave me a list of exercises, but they don't really offer any instruction.
I just need some help explaining the lifting exercises, showing me the right form, and helping me understand when and how to determine the appropriate weights during lifting. Once I get the routine, I can go from there.

Too bad that the trainers at your gym are not more hands on.
The original Body For Life book by Bill Phillips is terrific for starting out. It is out of print but you can get copies on eBay. Easy to read and clear instructions. Includes a great routine and nutrition advice. Cannot recommend it enough, it changed my life.
