Related: About this forumNegativity loop
I am finding myself in a negativity loop. I can't seem to break out of it towards a positive perspective on much of anything. I can identify contributing factors, but that's as far as I can get. I will also be getting outdoors for a hike today, which is a "treatment" for me, but, mentally, I'm stuck.
Any wisdom out there?

(35,185 posts)I bundled up yesterday and went out and walk in a 33° windchill because of the depression that was threatening to take over. My best friend just went to Florida for the winter, I think Im gonna need some horrible dental work soon, I cant decide about getting a Medicare supplement plan. Im just gonna put on all my clothes and go out for a walk. Good luck I hope something brightens your day

I'm sorry you're feeling down.

(15,359 posts)morning and do some strength training. I just got some insulated pants. I can comfortably go out now well below freezing even. I kind of like that. Just strolling along enjoying the morning, not even feeling it when it's really cold. I hate not getting out so bad that I had to equip myself for anything short of a hurricane or a blizzard.
My thing is some depression I get when reminded of some bad experiences. I don't think I'll even end up on medication. One thing I didn't think it would involve is talking to her about the political situation. Before my second visit, I was already looking forward to bringing that up. I'd like to be able to be informed without the gloom and anxiety it brings on. Maybe she'll help with that.
It's pretty early on, but I'm glad I asked to see a therapist. I had it in mind that I would for some time if things got to me again.

(25,855 posts)Is this someone you found online - which is a viable option these days?
I have worked with therapists over my life - some more helpful than others. One who actually left me scarred.
Yes - politics, climate - two major triggers for me.
Really appreciate your reply. Have good day and a great walk.

(15,359 posts)On my walk, going through our local community college, a couple of their staff were setting up a booth for student orientation. I didn't know what they were about for sure, just that they evidently serviced low income people. I figured at least for that, I could see who they would hook me up with.
I got an actual doctor. Since I was filling out the paperwork and they asked about depression and anxiety, I decided it was time to answer yes. My new doc saw that and asked if I'd like to be referred to a therapist. They have a man and woman there seeing people for behavior health. It's a new thing. I kind of think it's helpful that they have another paying patient. Even if it turns out it's not all that helpful to me, maybe I help them establish it and it's good for others.

It is no measure of health to be well adjusted to a profoundly sick society.

In a two-party system, to have one party go totally off the rails, in the meanest & nastiest ways possible, is alarming. It's alarming that only a handful of GOP politicians will speak out against the cancer that is consuming their party. And for us, the constituency, to have family & friends who still support this party isbewildering. IMO, unless one is a never-trumper, then republican voters support all the shit that is now the Republican Party. How do you reconcile that with "decent people?"
That said, we've had wonderful sunny weather, but with lots of wind. Today, however seems to be nice, so we're going for a walk. That always helps my spirits. I've also found that music lifts my spirits, so try putting on some of your fave tunes. And I like watching movies. Pick some feel-good movies. And snacks. Don't forget snacks.

(71,713 posts)i'm pretty stuck in the muck myself, but starting to crawl out.
yoga rly helps. i have had a hard time eating, so i focused on having something besides coffee and cigarettes, which helps.
but i only get so many good days in a row, and i have to take a day or 2 to recharge. i resent those days, but i try to just accept that that is the way it is.
i spend a lot of time zoned out on netflix. i picked up a hat i started knitting last winter, so i can do something besides veg. anything to quiet that inner criticism.
me- but you dont even need a hat.
also me- yes, but i could use the therapy.
be gentle w yourself. you have a lot of company these days.

(698 posts)Meditation helps, with daily practice. Exercising an hour a day, even in 15 minute increments, helps. And medication can help most of all. Any family doctor/internist can prescribe it.
I hope you feel better soon. (((((hugs)))))
