so, i've made a few posts here about tracing my tree.
it's been fun and i've found a lot of info. certainly enough to apply for my irish passport, which was my alleged purpose.

so far it has been fits and starts, and mostly just what ancestry and myheritage come up with.
i'd like to take it to the next level. i dont have time.

i'd like to know more than births and deaths. i know there's info out there, but a lot of it is paywalled.
ie-i've found the last folks to come from ireland, but so far havent tripped over the 1st.
i'd like to track down some local spots, like my mom's cousin's lake house and my dad's family's hardware store.

i'm planning to go in the near future, and think i will book a 'heritage tour'. so, looking for spots.
houses arent hard, but farms and businesses would be the real jewels, i think.

i have a good size tree on myheritage, and a small 1 on ancestry. have several relatives there tho. have a bit on familysearch.
ondoutside dug up quite a bit of info for me, too.

1. Problem is, some of the property records may have to be done in person

Some states, such as North and South Carolina, have their historic deed records online. Sometimes you're lucky and they are available online but by county - and you have to research which county the land was in then and now as county lines changed over the years.

If your ancestors might have gotten land grants, either for their military service or by purchasing them, BLM has those online.

All of those sources are free unless you want to have them print copies for you. Usually you can save the digital versions for free.

FamilySearch.org has resources that can help you find where to locate sources for different locations.

My early education in researching family records started with my Mom looking up her family. She was very, very lucky in that all her ancestors moved to Perry County, Alabama between 1819 and 1834 and her parents still lived there. Until her mother died, we'd go spend part of the summer with my grandparents while Mom would drive to the courthouse and look up the old deeds. When it came time to look for burials we'd all go to the various cemeteries and take pictures of the tombstones.

I'd volunteer to do it for you for free - I find it relaxing to look up other people's trees since most of my ancestors on both sides are well researched over the last 150 years - but I am getting all sorts of medical tests in prep for a surgery and my concentration sucks right now.

2. it's rly not about money.

i just dont have time.
i dont need a hobby.

i'm not far from a big mormon temple. i could spend a couple of afternoons there and answer most of the questions i have now.
but i'm happy to spend the money on someone who has better questions.
