Cooking & Baking
Related: About this forumJust a thought, about what I read on FB
If you are using the microwave to cook French fries. Then you dont remember when fries, crunched, snapped, and had a bit of salt on them.
MrsK used to call todays French Fries,
Potato noodles.
I believe Im banned from FB

(2,863 posts)Wendys said. Hot, crispy fries!
I told her ok ,go ( it was a half hour drive to nearest Wendys)
She came home, and said, dont waste your time
My point Ocelot, is a Bob Dylan song,
The times, they are a changin
One thing that doesnt change, people who know how to cook, keep on cooking.
Lets eat , good food, like NJCher.
Lets eat crispy fries, lets buy cheaper ingredients, lets grow, our basil, parsley and just spend,
A few more minutes in the kitchen,
And cook,
Like our Grandmothers did.

(2,863 posts)So carry on,
When I was young, my parents were poor,
We had gov cheese and gov eggs,
OMG I was hungry, so I picked a pan up, cracked and egg, put on cheese,
And got my butt beaten when Mom came home, cuz, I didnt clean up after me.
But I learned my lesson, I was fed, oh, crap! Clean, what you cook in.
And now, 40 years later,
I still remember, egg and chees sammich, I still remember, getting my butt whipped,
Im just sharing to the younger members here,
Pick up a pan, cook, for you, and a neighbor, the online meals are expensive,
What you just did, and you fed a neighbor, was cheaper
And you arent hungry, neither is your neighbor.

(8,824 posts)We are fortunate. There were times Im both of our upbringings that the big ole block of cheese came in handy. That and the 1 pound block of margarine would make a jell of. Grilled cheese. The eggs were off limits to up. Bread. Butter and cheese all fair game.

(2,863 posts)Sonic tater with cheese? I would drop LilBit off, and Sonic on 39 th Ave in Gainesville, knew me. They do their menu well.
As I dont have my LilBit anymore,, just talk about fast food, vs, cooking
I did the sonic thing, for my 4 bucks, for my one serving,
I can buy, and cook, not only for me, but 4 other neighbors,
Difference is,
I just had to wash dishes.

(8,524 posts)Cheat with Hormel chili in a can and shread cheddar all over them. 😋 We're having them tomorrow night for the college football championship game. Baby backs in the crock pot, Caesar salad and banana pudding for dessert (might try to eat the pudding with my fingers to see what it's like to be a republican).

(113,130 posts)Kids these days are so divorced from cooking that they don't know diddly squat even about reheating precooked food properly.
I never signed up for Farcebook. I didn't like Zuck's business plan. If I had, I wouldn't have lasted long.
French fries , snap! They are crispy, salted
Lets just cook,
We also need to teach the kids how to cook . We are old, I get more satisfaction from bringing a child into my kitchen. And teaching them, than I get from a post on here
Im kinda making a point,
As an elderly, our job is to teach, share our knowledge.
Our job is not to eat , crispy fries
Our job is, to teach our children, that life, moves too quickly.
We need to slow , our children down.
Our job , as older parents, is , to teach. Our children, to what we know. Not to answer posts
That I made,
French fries in microwave?
No, our job as parents, is hard,
All ya gotta know is
Fries never come out crispy, from a microwave.
And teach your children that!

(113,130 posts)My mother absolutely despised cooking and during the week, when my dad was on the road, it was Campbell's soup and sandwiches.
She was thrilled when TV dinners came out, just shove them into an oven and return 30 minutes later and it was a full dinner.
I learned to cook from Julia Child. Those TV shows saved me from poisoning myself.
Kids today don't have that, they have food porn and competitions. It's no wonder they try to cook French fries in microwaves.
Cooking is either a nuisance best left to brown people in factories or it's a fine art and totally beyond them.

(2,863 posts)Pat ground beef into a 9x13 sheet pan and toss it in oven, then cut to fit bread! Hamburgers! Oh that greasy, gray , mass of whatever, still haunts me.

(113,130 posts)but honestly, frozen fries can be cooked in a dry frypan over low-medium heat, they just require a lot of flipping and stirring.
Chinese steamer no bueno, same reason as the microwave.

(26,729 posts)scrape off the skins. Cut them. Cook them in oil. The best really is Crisco. Which can be saved and use again and again.
So good.
Frozen versions can't compare. Trust me. Try the real thing.
I have often made french fries this way as a full meal. It's been a while, so I probably need to do it again.

(2,863 posts)I would kinda do the same thing, but with a mandolin, and then make her some " fresh chips" !( parmasean and sea salt, was her fave flavor)
I agree 100% , just seems like a bit of work for just me. And i seldom eat fries anymore.
