In a word, no. I tried it 3 different ways and it didnt turn out well at all. An oven where you can
set the temperature is much better. Oh well live and learn. I will keep using the Dutch Oven but
over a fire hung under a tripod on a chain or on a bed of coals in a fire pit.
Now you know.

(17,435 posts)Mine is cast iron snd I preheat it snd the lid in the oven to make sure it is at temp before putting the dough in.
Spray some water for steam. Keep temp at 425 and then remove lid, lower temp to 400, and finish.
Forget exact times. I think 20 minutes at 425, then 30 at 400. Varies by loaf size though.
Crispy crust, nice texture.

(13,796 posts)The toaster oven was some 50 degrees off.
Looking forward to better baking.
I had a Breville but it quit just after the warranty ran out. It was a 50 cent inline fuse that required a lot of screws to be removed from the back and then I couldn't find the fuse amid the wires tucked into a 1/4 inch gap between metal pieces.
Oh well. Some stuff is just hell to repair.

(299 posts)leading the cub and boy scout troops in Alaska. We became fairly proficient with corn bread, pancakes, monkey bread, breakfast conglomerates with eggs and Bacon/sausage/Spam, as well as the beans and lasagna.
I still cook over the fire using dutch ovens set in the coals or suspended over the flame. I like using the frozen Hawaiian bread loafs to make monkey bread for those cold morning breakfasts before hitting the river with the rod.
Even if the bottom is burnt it still tastes better than most anything I can cook in the kitchen.

(15,198 posts)Are you using it over a flame or in the actual oven? I bake bread in a Dutch oven preheated in the oven for at least an hour. I use the New York Times recipe for no-knead bread. Its super easy And makes a wonderful loaf of artisan bread.
