Wanna see a little shelf I made?

My sister-in-law asked me to make a small shelf (about 16" long * 8" deep) to go beside their bed. They wanted it to fold up when not in use. I looked for suitable hinges but could not find any I liked. So I made a suggestion: a shelf without hinges that "stowed" in 2 positions: up and down. They haven't seen it yet. It is cherry, and has multiple coats of a hand rubbed oil finish on it.

I submitted a shelf like this at first, but they opted for a smaller butterfly pattern
